We only need one more good half to beat Panama. As ever, we are struggling to beat a decent quality, organised team. And we didn't lose for a few reasons, including the attacker pulling his foot away when Pickford came in to smash him. Wasn't in the area, but it was really rash.

The Colombia (yellow shirts, white shorts) vs DR Congo (bright blue shirts and shorts) match is a very aesthetically pleasing contest.

If we had won last night we would have won the group.

As it stands, we have Cape Verde, then probably Mexico, then likely Brazil, then Argentina then the final.

If we finish 2nd, it would likely be Portugal, then Spain, USA then Germany.

By the time we play Panama, we will know more about our path to glory. We can decide, the South American path or the European path.

Deadlegs skied that shot because he knew this.

Looked very like Gareth tonight. Pretty clueless apart from set-pieces and showing that if they don't work, we struggle.
Still all would have been forgiven if our 60-goal striker had buried one of the best chances he'll have all tournament (barring penalties).
The only thing different from Gareth was I thought that Kane actually held his position and didn't keep dropping deep to get involved and crowding the midfield/stifling Bellingham.

Team selection was puzzling - I understand Guehi and Spence for their pace against Ghana's counter-attack. But if you're expecting counter-attacking, you're surely expecting the low block too, so why pick Gordon, whose one trick of running very fast and then falling over isn't going to work if there is no space behind to run into. You need clever players who can find pockets of space and make incisive passes - players like, dare I say it, Gibbs-White and Foden.

He still did it enough to annoy me. Lumbering around struggling to get to the ball, not taking it on the half turn, often looking most likely to turn it over. Like a centre half in midfield playing back to goal. [itch]

Completely a League 1 player. Must have something scandalous on the owners of Bayern.

All strikers miss chances. Better he misses that one yesterday (with his wrong foot, which makes it less good than it would otherwise be) than a similar one in the knockout games when it might actually cost us.

He's an excellent finisher, the notion that missing a chance (or a penalty) changes that is just rubbish.

    ...his movement though...

He's a great fit for their setup. They have nine players who can outplay the ten of most opposition they come up against. So he's free to drift into goalscoring areas. Your straw man fallacy is not the winning argument that you seem to think it is.

11th best team in the world according to FIFA - are only potential winners "decent"? Who would you limit that to? Spain (didn't look much better than England drawing with Cape Verde), France and Argentina?

Report from the ground. Pretty turgid game all round. We are not the only side to struggle against a low block. The sex offender did well to shackle Kane. Our crossing was poor and they have a centre half who is about 8ft tall. Rice’s set piece delivery was woeful. Anthony Gordon is utter, utter garbage. Elliot didn’t do anything wrong but didn’t do much generally.
We really miss a MGW/Foden/Palmer type. Roger’s and Saka were lively when they came on. Eze less so (I forgot he was on the pitch).

Atmosphere was good. Ghana fans are ace. Meet several Forest fans in the fancy hospitality because that’s how we all roll.

On to Panama….are they already out? Is that a good or bad thing?

    Yes and good, I'd say.

Baldrick here seems to have overlooked many of the facts that are mentioned by the author themselves in the piece, and goes on to shoehorn whats left of reality into an exposion of why long term this is indeed a winning cunning plan. That they apparently can see, but will be kryptonite to other football professionals with better squads, who also wise to the ways of the world.

Totally - my point there was not about Kane, but that the whole turgid team performance would have been glossed over if he had have(of) scored, as England would have won the game and qualified as group winners.

    Yes. Fascinating.

What a time to be alive!

Ndoye off the bench to kill the game. Although it's unclear for whom.
