I can’t recall seeing a roundabout in the USA. They’re quite rare over there.

  • 13 Oct 2026, 3:44 p.m.

How do you get on and off the freeways, then? Obviously not a slip road and roundabout like the UK?

  • 13 Oct 2026, 3:47 p.m.

I reckon I probably drive the least out of everyone on here and I've even done some driving in the US. Automatic car. Big roads. You'll be fine.

Why don't you go on Google Street view and "pretend" you are driving what look like some of the trickier bits of the journey. Add vroom vroom noises for bonus points. It'll probably help you feel better about it.

  • 13 Oct 2026, 3:59 p.m.

There’s one on the south west corner of Central Park. That’s about it I reckon. (And it’s chaos, nobody has a clue).

  • 13 Oct 2026, 3:59 p.m.

I actually have gone as far as looking it up online (minus the vroom, vroom noises sadly) and some fella has filmed himself driving into the city up I93. It'll be reet.

Depends on the state. Some are starting to recognise that it's a far superior option to the 4 way stop.

I didn't like driving in the US - I turned right onto a main road when the light was green and had loads of cars hooting at me who were on the road - how could the light be green for me, but not red for them?

  • 13 Oct 2026, 4:16 p.m.

Isn't there a slightly odd turning right give way thing? Like it's green for you to turn right ... Providing it's clear.

As Russ says, roundabouts seem easier.

Jim commenting about driving cars, in Americano less, feels weird.

  • 13 Oct 2026, 6:35 p.m.

Some states allow you to turn right on a red as long as you come to a complete stop, and it's clear for you to join the flow of traffic. Most of Canada does as well, it's a good rule.

I don't know why you would get grief for turning on a green though.

  • 13 Oct 2026, 6:47 p.m.

It is a good rule. We do have a tendency to catastrophise change. AoNZ had a weird give way to the right rule when turning left, and got rid of it against strong opposition that hundreds would die. It was seamless.
Samoa switched to driving on the left (for consistency with AU and AoNZ). It was cautious, well-organised, and again pretty painless.

It’s always very hard to make a case against “people will die” with “but it’s a pain in the arse”. Makes you look like a callous monster. But it leads to a ratcheting up of inconveniences. See also “Martin’s law” and the interminable queues to get into the city ground nowadays.

  • 13 Oct 2026, 8:45 p.m.

This confuses me as Martin was killed by someone in the foyer with a bomb who hasn't had to go through any search.

Someone so inclined turning up with a rucksack full of bomb ten minutes before kick off could have a much bigger field day than pre-law and never need to be searched.

Guessing that if it’s off the premises, the organiser isn’t liable under the law?

Similar queue on Main Stand cat park.
