Today I ran 4 miles and just made it back to the lodge for a shit. Which is better than yesterday when I ran 3 miles and didn't.

I'm thinking this means you had a shit in the woods yesterday, but maybe just means you didn't need one at all.

Went to the gym for the first time in many many months. A gentle work out and no shits in the gym.

    You're obviously doing it wrong.

Rejoined the gym. Gym is half a mile away up a 1 in 10 hill, so thinking three times a week in my lunch break, jog up the hill should be good on the knees, then focus on building core strength at the gym for 45 minutes, then a longer route home to avoid strain on knees and warm down. At the weekend a swim with the youngest and game of badminton with the eldest. If I make it routine, I can make it work. 2 years in an desk job and I can feel the difference.

This plan sounds good. In reality, going from nothing to that sounds like a recipe for failure, you're talking about five workouts a week. I'd maybe suggest target the gym twice a week to start with, and when you inevitably miss one don't worry about it, prioritize enjoying whatever exercise with your kids at the weekend. At our age recovery is essential and you're not giving yourself a lot of room for it.

Yeah sounds great, especially the mix of cardio and strength. Only you will know if you can manage it recovery wise for your age. One way to find out...

I'm not in dreadful shape, and the swim won't be intense in anyway, and I'm a youngster on here at 44. I shall listen listen to my body if it isn't up to something though.
