But this World Cup is fucking brilliant

I think you might be bias due to the games being in your timezone. There's a huge apathy around my normally football-mad friends.

This. I'm struggling more than usual to get invested in the tournament for precisely that reason.

I know it's likely entitlement of the highest order, but with European hosting the kick-off times lend themselves far more to casual viewing in the UK.

I think I can just about be arsed to watch an England game tonight starting at 9pm, but that's largely down to Anderson's involvement. Not sure I'd bother if it was 10pm like some of the other group games. And 2am kick-offs? Fuck that.

But aren't most football fans in roughly this timezone? Especially once you consider Africa.

Regardless of timezones, or hydration breaks, or the expanded format, the quality of football has been outstanding and hugely entertaining.

Maybe, but then only if you care enough (in the UK anyway) to stay up until the early hours. I don't unfortunately, but would have watched far more if the kick-off times had been earlier over here.

As I say, entitlement of the highest order.

I’m in Rhode Island and heading to the England Ghana game this afternoon. Met quite a few Ghana fans on the plane over yesterday and they are all quietly confident.

It’s been proper thunder and torrential rain for the last day. So it’s “muddy pitch in November” time. Let’s see how they like it.

My brother and his wife have flown over for it. Just sent some photos and it doesn’t look like it’s raining currently. But a big queue for the train or bus or whatever they are waiting for.

From what I've read and the bits I've seen, entertaining yes, but not necessarily high quality.

I can understand you being entertained, the rest is up for debate.

Sure. Although it's not one you'd be entering with any degree of honesty, given you've made it clear from the outset that you are specifically and deliberately predisposed to not enjoying it (and tbf, you aren't the only one on here). I do sometimes think that you get more enjoyment from actively disliking professional football than you would from actually just, y'know, watching it.

Someone, somewhere will have placed a bet on Messi, Haaland, Mbappe, Ronaldo and Kane to score 2+ goals in this round of games and will be now agonising over cashing out.

Something you want to tell us, Dave?

(With two games left and only needing a single goal from Kane against Ghana and Panama, I wouldn't be doing much agonizing.)

This round I think so another one for Ronaldo and two for Kane tonight?

Yes, this round of 2nd games so just 2 for Kane tonight, but sadly not for me.
I do have a free £5 for tonight's game, though I haven't decided what to go for yet.

Ah I see, just this round. That would take a touch more agonizing I think, but you placed the bet with the intention of winning it and now you're in a strong position to do so. Don't be a pussy, would be my advice.

The only way ENG are winning this at the moment is from a set piece. Bitty game and not moving their low block around anywhere near as quick enough.

Madueke is so far inferior to Saka it's almost comical.

Might be time to find out how fit Saka is.
