Really struggled with two of the purples in connections even after I'd seen the answer. Just about got there now. (Yes, it's American, they are allowed to be US-centric.)

The ones I fail to get are almost always due to American references.

If I hadn't got the other three categories, I'd never have got there.

I often find the purple ones stupid and today is no exception, but I'm struggling to find the American element in it.

I think you're wrong on the first one. The second one I just put down to laziness of the puzzler rather than any specific pronunciation difference.

This demonstrates what I mean: dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/croquette

I use the English pronunciation, you must all use the American.

I clicked on both of those and the UK pronunciation is exactly correct for the Connections clue. So it's the usual Talkback "I'm not thick, it's the Americans that are wrong" except in this case it's an even more spurious argument than usual.

In the Uk version, the first syllable is shorter and less stressed. But I’ve also been careful not to say Americans are wrong, just different.

Don't take it personally. Russ is just grumpy because canada were shit, and he has to listen to that marsh fella.

I'm grumpy because I'm in the middle of moving house right now and it's a hateful process. But it doesn't make me wrong: the first syllable is pronounced "crow", which is the entire clue.

    How are we saying it?

I'd say the first syllable as croc .

Me too. I think Americans pronounce closer to croquet but with a hard t at the end.
