Actually the Canadians I know with work have been great in the last year or two (qv the 5 years prior) so all positive on the Canadians being lovely people front.

It's a fair point again, there's lots of good in fascism, the trains run on time for a start.

Fair. I'm an expat who wouldn't claim to be the best of England. And wouldn't claim the Kiwis who left are the best or worst either.

This is exactly it. In a functioning market, rent would be set at (to simplify things ludicrously) ‘whatever is left after everything else is paid for.. including a reasonable rate of return for the business’.

But real estate markets are fucked and distorted at every turn… so here we are. And because of how fucked real estate is.. reducing those taxes that impacts cafe’s and the like ultimately will not help much because eventually it all just flows back into higher rents. That’s what happens when the entire economy is designed to funnel money to landowners.

See also pretty much everyone who leaves their country of birth to live somewhere else. Not that all people who don't aren't good people - the denizens of this site being a prime example of why that's not the case - but I'll always hold up Australia as the prime example. Been twice, hate the place. By far the most racist and bigoted people I've ever met. Never met a single Aussie outside of Australia who wasn't an absolutely lovely person though.
