Aren't you a misery. I quite like the phrase. Least when it's Forest related.

Did you know that the Mona Lisa is an art installation, not actually a picture?
The acshual art is the queue around the block of muppets wasting hours to see a stamp sized picture of a plain bint, who is dead.
Ordered a new Mac Book Pro in anticipation of Taiwan being invaded by the Chinese. Ironically the new machine was shipped from China using DHL. This time last year the DHL facility was having problems with temps nicking all the packages as they figured that at Christmas it would be mostly gifts. So jump to 2024 and Apple tell me that my computer has been delivered. i said, "How can it be, the delivery required a signature". They said, "It was signed Christian Alvarez"... Err is that my name? Is it the name of my wife? Um.. NO!
Also said Laptop didn't actually leave the sorting facility in nearby Franklin Park. So how could have it been delivered to our house those thieving bastards. Apple have promptly sent me another one using the same Carrier. I called them and asked it to be sent to an apple store so I could pick it up there. They told me that it was being internationally delivered (same carrier) and that they had to deliver it to my home as it's a replacement. I told them it would probably get stolen again. They informed me that once it was on it's way I could request a different carrier. This really doesn't make sense to me as it is already being shipped by DHL. I told them that as soon I had confirmation it was on it's way then I would ask for UPS or Federal Express. They said that would be fine. Not sure how that is going to shake out. How many computers can Apple have nicked before it's not worth their while? I special ordered it off the com because I wanted certain things on it which were not in the store brands. At this rate I suspect I am never going to get the thing and Taiwan might as will be invaded because it will end up with the same result.
Chicago: Frustrated.
Today I accidentally deleted about 10TB of crucial data. Then realised the backup system broke about 6 months ago and nobody has fixed it yet (despite my complaints). Started to fear I genuinely could get sacked. Had an emergency meeting at 7pm with IT reps from various parts of the company/globe. Turns out that there is some other backup system (whole machine rather than the database) and that it took a backup a week ago. Still really far from ideal but it's taken the heat out of the issue (and my face).
There's many learnings to be made, mostly about why I was having to do the work I was doing in the first place in such a crucial system, and why I had the permissions to do this much damage, but that's for in a few days time when the backups are restored.
Worst 45 minutes I've had at this company since I joined about 5 years ago.
If you get the sack make sure my name is on those West Ham tickets.
We've all done it Shades. Moaned about other peoples IT, that is. I've definitely done it before, trashed data that is.
Hope all works out okay..sounds like a definite process problem, you shouldn't be working on the only copy of live data, and that shouldn't be your decision. Whoever left key systems with no backup for six months, should be fired into orbit.
I'm still a bit shook up. Despite getting back from three days on the piss in Italy late last night I think I'm going to open a beer.
I truly know the feeling of that punch to the stomach.
More than once I've pulled overnight, and rolling, sessions rebuilding critical servers (including rebuilding data) that have stopped many people working. Apart from the physical problems of tiredness and stress, the relative terror of not knowing if, never mind when, you can recover them, never really leaves you. I'm glad those days are largely over.
Huge lesson learnt. Gather the backup is about 4 hours away from being completed. Will definitely be staying up late to see how it goes.
Are there any clues as to how your mistake came to happen?
Anyway, yes, I've been there myself.
100%. Though don't really realise when you're making the mistake.
With that sort of record, Jim do you want an admin job on here? We could do with another JP the Fucknut stylee purging.
I still think Jamesob is JP.
Not that any of your morons thought of it considering you are too busy chasing Kiddie Fiddlers.
Chicago: Digital Psychologist.
I think JP left us because he’s got better things to do than being JP. So he’s definitely got better things to do than being EBP.
Ugly Christmas sweaters. It's a stupid idea that has long since stopped being fun.
Yeah. Christmas jumper day.
I'll 'get involved' (twitch) with the enforced festive fun and wear it for the photos because I'm a brazen corporate tart.
