A similar thing happened to a Canadian relative of my ex, she and her husband were adopted by a bunch of Millwall fans they ended up talking to in a pub and taken to a match, where they had a great time.

My (American) ex-girlfriend who has little interest in sport (s) beyond the Mets*, is something of a Doncaster Rovers fan. One visit back to England many years ago meant we went to see Donny play Swindon Town (as my Donny supporting friend we were staying with in Oxford was not about to drive us to the City Ground).
The abject desolation of Swindon, including a halftime “show” of some poor soul in a Robin costume gyrating to Rockin’ Robin, the grim weather, and many jokes made at the expense of said mascot, meant she has been a closet Rovers fan ever since.
I remember precisely nothing of the game but I do remember her asking “Do you think he practices his dance in front of his kids?” and my friend responding “only on the weekends he has them.”*As I said, little interest in sport.
