You can laugh at all sorts of things. Laughing is technically brought on by stimuli which might include nervousness or fear of how to react to something. People often laugh when great ill befalls other people (and thus clowns, slapstick, candid camera, trigger happy tv, jackass, et al).
So laugh at anything - friends breaking their legs, people falling on their arse, falling from great heights, or crashing their cars. Whatever you want.
Not all of which are objectively comedic.
Silly things, like slapping someone with a fish as part of a dance, singing about canned pork products, and having a a kitten destroy a tiny model of london, are not funny. Except they are to some people, in some contexts. McIntyre and Lee are funny to many people, and not to others who think they are irritating twats.
This is how comedy generally works. It's quite personal. Especially when it's at it's keenest at the margins.
I can safely say I know the name Peter Kay but haven't heard one bit of his comedy or even his voice. None of this resonants with me, other than apparently he was quite famous in Britain a while ago.
There are mentions of Peep show in this thread which I absolutely loved and still love. I am assuming that some of the writers involved with Kay ended up coming up with that comedy classic which I believe is 22 years ago. For no reason whatsover I think I would probably hate Peter Kay. I am a Jimmy Carr fan personally and I don't know how he stacks up to some of those other British luminaries that I may have missed so who knows?
I know it's irrational and even childish but hey ho I am probably too far removed from British life to get a lot of some of the this... Or maybe I am not and have gone full on Tricky grumpy.... If I am deported maybe I will re-connect to the finer points of British nuance and hilarity, Or Maybe not...
Chicago: Transplant.
Edit: To be fair I don't know Stewart Lee or Daniel Kitson either...
Kitson does next to no Telly that I’m aware of. One of the best stand ups I’ve ever seen, if only because it seems like he’s making the majority of it up as he goes and still landing a phenomenal amount of jokes.
Depending on when you left the UK you may have known of Lee (with Herring) as part of Fist of Fun also with The Actor Kevin Eldon. Very student friendly and quotable fare, taking that mantle from The Mary Whitehouse Experience.*
*They and Big Night Out were all the rage when I was in college.
Daniel Kitson is absolutely wonderful. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen him (he really likes Melbourne so he’s over most years) and it covers standup, storytelling, plays, elaborate and over-ambitions projects.. always thoughtful and funny, and I know people who know him… and know he’s a lovely guy and both he and his public persona are entirely genuine.
He’s absolutely my language through. Similar age, outlook, interests.. so his career and development as a person clicks with me.. so it may not, in fact, be that he is a generational comedy genius.. and rather that he is just the talented version of me that I secretly wish I was, and I have developed a parasocial attachment as a result.
