There's definitely a generational thing where, on average, the more recently the player was involved directly in the game, the more analytical they are. But Steve Hodge remains the best of the Radio Nottingham analysts and he retired ages before Perch (although was involved in coaching and scouting, I think?)
I used to see him at occasionally at West Bridgford Asda in his skips when he was at Notts, but not sure if he did anything after working with the yuth there. Roughly fifteen years ago?
Fothers appears to have gone full Barry Girdles in the latest Forest Focus. Started wittering on about Scot Gemmill while commenting that there's always one player that "everyone hates", then mentioning Lucca and not even Bakwa or Ndoye.
The one player everyone hates is surely someone who is always picked (see John McGovern back in the day).
Even the managers hate Lucca!
And he was actually talking about Morato, who is a late option these days.
Oh good, Birtles on Forest Focus. Five minutes in, already baffled by naming subs who can't play (clue, we named 12 subs last night and there was probably almost no scenario where Hanks or Whitehall were getting on either) and dropped a "Cloughie always used to say" about subs being fit (he could only name one sub, Garry).
I honestly thought that there might be some possiblity of interpreting Barry Girdles' comments a bit more generously, but no. I'm inclined to defend him as a rule, but that was really poor.
He's an idiot. I won't be listening to that episode.
Disappointingly Mikey agreed about the subs.
Understandably, the plebs tend to defer to the pros. Temps is the only one who might have challenged him.
It also failed to dawn on him (and was not mentioned by any of them actually) that the sub selection might have been a bit of, albeit desperate, kidology on the gaffer’s behalf to keep Emery on his toes. But, yeah, that episode was bloody slog with Birdles. I think they knew what they were doing with the timing of his appearance though, inasmuch as everyone’s already feeling down so having him on couldn’t make things much worse.
I’m a regular and appreciative listener. Cannot listen to Girdles though so will not be bothering with that one. Matt Davis must know what a turn off he is?
