Good analysis. Better than Tricky is able to offer.
It worked well for the first half to be honest. If we'd been 3-0 up, as we deserved, we might have brought on someone like Yates or Sangare or Dominguez and shored things up. But we'll never know.
We absolutely ran the game for the first 40 minutes. Schlager was everywhere, the chances were piling in, probably the best we have played all season and Palace just couldn't cope with it, especially the movement of Ndoye, MGW and Delap. It was as good as the 7-0 at home against Brighton, the big win at Sunderland last year, or thr first half at start of last season against Brentford. On another day we would have taken at least a couple more of those chances and then nobody, not even the most miserable Glasner sceptics, would have been questioning thr manager or saying we didn't have enough in midfield.
Then they fluked a scrappy goal and we looked less solid whenever they broke, and yes we didn't control it as well, although we still came out in the second half and battered them for 15 minutes.
The finishing was obviously not good enough, and probably the balance wasn't right because if you play at the tempo we were you're probably going to make errors eventually. We were though way better than them and if that games was played 10 times we would win 9/10.
Alternatively Forest are perfectly capable of playing that game another 10 times and fucking it up in a similar way several of those times.
Or in a different way.
Given Ndoye's subsequent - and general - finishing on another day he doesn't score his 3rd minute chance, Strand Larsson buries his 9th minute chance rather than sticking it straight at Sels and we're 1-0 down before all the rest of the 'big chances'.
Whatever. Arsenal next weekend. Even if they rest players ahead of facing Bayern I very much doubt we'll manage 23 shots on goal again.
I think our confidence is brittle, so when we conceded the first there was a collective "here we go again" which led to the second and third. With a few more wins, we'd have been more able to bounce back from conceding the first (or at least closed the game down until half time and reset).
The collective view seems to be new Glasner system will take time to bed in and we are getting better each game.
Seems like, particularly based on yesterday, the system isn't too bad, it's just we are dreadful at finishing chances. Does that just need time to bed in?
My view would be that we are playing players who are less good at their role, whether that be kick or run (partly choice: Ndoye over CHO; partly loss: Anderson, Elanga; partly trying retain the asset in a sunk cost: McAtee). Consequently we are worse than we have recently been, but not as bad as when we started in the division.
We just don't kick the ball well enough (maybe it will get better)....but then a lot of the other teams also don't kick well enough. It's the current fashion. Run over kick. Move it short. Don't put it in the air. Don't beat a man, pass around them. r-r-r-r-run-around.
--edit---
...and of course if you are constantly making athletic movements, it's harder to kick when the ball is at your feet. Plus if you are mostly pushing it safely, and short, you become less well practised at hitting it long and accurately (or hard). It's interesting that current number nines are mostly not moving, and executing good kick to finish chances. It's a specialism, and not really part of the overall team shape - or you play with a false nine doing largely what all the others are doing. If you play modern systems football the aerial and early ball threat is largely gone, and you want 11 buzzy midfielders (I'm including the goalkeeper here)
I think Ndoye over CHO is partly due to Ndoye being quicker and better able to go past Delap and partly because CHO is coming back from an injury.
And McAtee is playing because Glasner wants his best passer in that position and thinks having 3 central defenders behind him can accommodate that. The sunk cost in McAtee is similar to the ones we've pretty much written off in Hutchinson and Bakwa.
Yes is my view. There were times against Liverpool, more against Villa and almost a full half against Palace when we were as bright as we've been since promotion. But we're fragile, there's an issue that's creating a hole between the midfielders and defenders (not necessarily the midfielders' fault; perhaps more that the central defenders aren't stepping up?), and we're missing some fantastic chances. There's always a chance that we're just irredemiably shit, but I reckon that as long as the players keep doing what they did so well in the first half (bar the abject defending) it'll come, given time. I think we'll be fine this season, mid-table-ish, but we all, including Marinakis, need to hold our nerve over the next few difficult games.
Agreed .... though I think I might like to see Sangare given a go instead of Schlager, and Diomande/Milenkovic/Murillo as a back three to try and make a bit more solid at the back.
