Oh shit. I agree with Russ. The world is ending. Queen-the works is an absolute classic.

    Chicago: Feeling weird.

I struggle to think of one good Queen song. The idea that there could be an album full just doesn't make any sense.

That’s because you have no taste but that’s okay if you did then we probably wouldn’t be on friendly terms.

    Chicago: Pragmatist.

Kerrang have released their top fifty albums of 2023. I sense I am going to be busy for the next few weeks trying to decide if they have good taste or lost it in 1991.

Starting at number 50 of course

    List here...

    Chicago: Occupied.

Ha, I opened that same list this morning. I've already listened to ten of them throughout the year (Foos, Sleep Token, Pupil Slicer, A7X, Metallica, Skindred, Empire State Bastard, Beartooth, QotSA and Corey Taylor) and there's at least a dozen more I have no interest in (looking at you Babymetal), but that still leaves over half the list to work my way through.

The new Green Day album is surprisingly good.

Agreed. Got tickets for the tour in June - looking forward to it.

This is absolutely terrific. Obviously I expect tricky to hate it, as he appears to all music made since Argybargy, but this was an inspired choice of band to cover this song.

Ha ha, you are wrong! I don't hate it for that reason. I hate it because I'm a talking heads fan.

Hate it would be too strong. I just don't find it in any way preferable to the original. It's mostly the same, but not as good, and the bits that are a bit different I'm not at all fond of. It's perfectly fine for people to do cover versions of songs. Even if they're not as good. Mostly they don't hit many highs - not least because the popularisation and perception is already established with a particular frame of reference. That's ear of the beholder, and even when really anodyne modern artists do crap cover versions, there may be a value in bringing great songs to a new audience. I don't think we are dealing with something on the level of Aretha Franklin's treatment of the Otis Redding song 'Respect' in this.

I'm not on the 'absolutely terrific' bandwagon.

I categorise that sort of thing as a ‘wedding band’ cover, albeit a very competent wedding band. Nothing wrong with that, but it leaves no impression. That one isn’t helped by them doing the popular thing of trying for a ‘just getting down in the studio for kicks’ vibe, when it’s very clearly a highly produced performance and video. I’m sure they are a good live band, but that’s not a live performance.. but it’s trying to pretend that it is. The lack of authenticity is a weighty cloud hanging over it. I would contrast with ‘The Killers’, who I think are shit, but who I’ve seen do magnificent ‘wedding band’ covers.. playing them straight, but with love for the songs and performing pouring out.

I won't idly stand by and hear this disrespect for Hayley Williams, who is fucking wonderful.

Well, obviously I will, there's fuck all I can do about it. But you're wrong.

Sometimes I worry that Russ and I might be the same person weirdly co-existing in the same universe. Except I'm taller, a bit less beardy and I don't understand American politics or forward passing amoured rugby.

Went to see The Go! Team at the Roundhouse in Camden on Saturday night. It's twenty years since the release of Thunder, Lightning, Strike, and they played the whole album live. I was interested to see how they would perform some of the tracks as there are a lot samples in them, but it worked really well and I had a bloody good night. Better than going to the Forest v Newcastle match anyway
