Spent an hour or so listening to Taylor Swift, because although I've heard songs here and there I've never actually listened to her music.

It's fine. It's perfectly listenable, easily forgettable pop music. She seems like a really nice person, but I'm not sure I understand why she is such a global phenomenon.

    1. Good pop songs will always work.
    2. Songs about her relationships, so feels a bit soap opera-era.
    3. Quite a pretty young lady.

Were you equally unsure about why Madonna was popular is the 80s?

No, I was very sure of why I liked Madonna in the 80s. I'm not convinced that Taylor is appealing to the same demographic or in the same way.

Point is Madonna crossed over - it wasn’t just about horny teenage boys. My 12 year old niece loves Taylor Swift in a similar way that plenty of girls at my school loved Madonna.

That's as may be, but I'm pretty sure that horny teenage boys aren't buying Taylor records, and that Taylor isn't getting played at nightclubs and discos (not that I've been in one of those for a very long time).

I am going to keep championing this band until they have conquered the world.

Their new album is out (Set Your Pussy Free) and it's awesome. Proper riot grrrl punk the way it used to be made.

My (almost) 5 year old likes Taylor Swift. I've listened to a fair bit. I quite like it too. She also seems to be a decent role-model and is hot. I would not object to going to one of her concerts sometime.

All this said, give me Green Day every (green) day of the week. They've just announced a UK tour next year which I'm hoping to get tickets for.

Admittedly, I have probably listened to slightly less TayTay than Russ… but I think Madonna is in a different world. Her records were littered with absolute bangers that stand up to this day, her image and persona were absolutely stand-out.

Swift has done social media exceptionally well.. I think her personality has perhaps propelled her to places her music doesn’t entirely belong. She’s very very safe, though.. and that works for an awful lot of people who want their entertainment to be… well… safe.

I don't know if she's as safe as she seems. I heard she had a habit of hooking middle-aged dads from the audience for sordid Spiderman-themed sex games in her dressing room. Luckily nobody round here would be at risk of falling victim to such a niche fetish.

This must have been an incredible festival. Amazing line up in the Lincolnshire boglands.

Love the way that he describes Lincolnshires rich pop heritage by identifying that someone came from Market Rasen, and someone came from Cleethorpes.

Indeed, this may well be my first festival in many years. That line up is jizztastic.

Currently in Bristol to deliver a business event I arranged largely because there are 2 gigs I want to see.
Tonight it is The Boo Radleys and Cud
Tomorrow is Fat White Family, more importantly supported by Just Mustard, Ditz and Panic Shack

Not sure what Jane's Addiction will be like these days, but that does look good.

I have tix to see Future Islands playing a very small venue in Jan which I am quite excited for.

I went to see New Model Army a few years back, mostly to meet some old mates, thought they would be shit, but they were very good, much improved with age.

Weirdly, that reads like a Pet Shop Boys lyric from the 'Actually' album.

Went to see the Soup Dragons in Camden on Tuesday night. They reformed for a short tour due to one of my best mates starting up a record label a couple of years back releasing vinyls of old BBC sessions (John Peel, Janice Long etc).

Link here if anyone interested in his releases.
