Cape Cod yes, but not Martha's. Province town had such a relaxed beach vibe compared to the city feel of Boston. Then all the witchcraft stuff in Salem was interesting to see in person.

I loved Martha's Vineyard when I went. There's also a really nice town called I think Newport nearby. Mus is the expert on the area though.

I'm currently on vacation in Croatia. It's everything people have said it is. What a brilliant country.

I wonder in 4-5 days whether you could base yourselves in Boston, then do a day trip to Cape Cod, and a day trip to Salem? Can't really recall how easy it was to get between them.

Had my hair cut. I'm back home now.

    I've gone very short.

    Hair's gone.

I might attack my fluff with the clippers later.
What a pair of groomers we are.

I don't want to ruin the dream but we can't manage to get people on secondment from UK to US these days. It's not a very immigrant friendly place and has pulled down the shutters.

GC might be able to do better as a bigger outfit. But I think your wife works too and getting both of you in would be double hassle.

Vancouver/Canada might be ok though, so dream back on.

Oh really? Interesting. A guy I know moved out a couple of years ago so I presumed it was pretty doable still with the right connections and HR skills.

If your visiting at the end of October - then the Cape is definitely quieter, but you also run the risk that the weather does not play ball. You’d also need to check ferry options as you’re away from Peak Season and some services don’t run. Provincetown is wonderful (also just note it’s very, very liberal, think Brighton..) if the weather does work out then you can also go whale watching from there. Newport is not technically on the cape, it’s about a 2 1/2hr drive from Ptown, but a really nice spot, good restaurants, lots of walking and some expensive shopping for Mrs BW, but its a schleck from Boston, where there is also plenty of expensive shopping. As Shady mentioned 4-5 days you’ll have time to cover Boston and at least one other spot. Plus it’s fall season so you may still get to catch the joy of leaf season, when all the leaves turn. Freedom trail will keep you busy for a day, Boston Common is fun place to hang out and the Bruins are at home on the 24th and 31st, if you want to take in a hockey game - at moment 150$ each gets you in.

    We did this. Absolutely amazing.

  • 2 Aug 2026, 6:17 p.m.

yep, we’ve done this multiple times now and it never gets boring, amazing every time.

We did whale-watching in Boston in 1992. Honestly thought I was going to die - never been as scared before or since. Clearly we had a bad experience but looking at your parents as a 12-year-old and seeing genuine terror in their eyes is not easily forgettable.

Mrs BW also doesn't do so well on boats, so I'd probably file this one in 'not for us', which is a shame.

This is really helpful, thank you. Would there be any particular areas of downtown Boston, or hotels, that you'd recommend?

And how much if he doesn’t want to be a majority shareholder and just wants to see the game?

  • 2 Aug 2026, 9:08 p.m.

For Boston that’s cheap - normally an average game ticket is going to run you over $200, sometimes closer to 3 or $400 not including the 50-80$ to park if you drive in. I was looking to take Senorita Mus to a game earlier this year and it worked out cheaper to drive to Ottawa or Long Island and watch the reverse fixture, rather than watch a game at TD Garden.

Which is why if we go to a game we tend to stay local and watch the Providence Bruins, who play in the AHL, one level below the NHL. Never pay more than $20 for a ticket and its a 20 min drive home rather than and hour and twenty (on a very good day) from Boston to home.

Couple of options but Back Bay is a good area to look at, You’ll be within walking distance of the Public Garden, Newbury Street, Duck Tours, the T, and dozens of restaurants, you can walk to the common from back bay in 10 mins, and you walk through the public garden which is always pleasant, and with the T being there if the weather isn’t great you can hop on that.

I very rarely stay in Boston but there are a bunch of hotels there, really comes down to how much you want to spend. The other advantage is that in the evening it’s a safe place to walk around.
