Labour just did well in holding Redbridge Council. Which occupies much of his seat.
The right wing press reckon anyone who takes over from Starmer will be crap. But also that Starmer is crap.
IMO Wes Streeting is a very good politician and has the instincts and nous that Starmer lacks. But he will be vilified as every Labour is. But then so will Burnham, or Rayner.
Because of the fucking state of the media in the country, I think that only Burnham would stand half a chance of keeping Farage out. But he's not even an MP (yet).
Yes, probably right. But even then the ghouls have started with the ‘peadophile protector’ nonsense which Reform MPs will then join etc.
Sam Coates of Sky was a fucking disgrace yesterday yelling about photos released of Starmer were fake news and government propaganda as they had taken and supplied by them…… only for Mark Austin to mutter a bit later they were actually PA photos. But damage was already done.
I was half watching and heard some animated twerp shouting FAKE NEWS YOU CANT BELIEVE THAT etc and wondered which Reform moron they had on, only for it to cut to the fucking reporter. I was amazed.
When I see people suggest reporters are on payrolls of certain people I tend to think that’s all a bit tin foil hat, but that was just odd yesterday.
What is the power base of Streeting? He hasnt seemed that much to me so what am I missing?
And Im getting a tiny bit conspiracy theory as well. There was so little coverage of Farage and the 5 million till today and almost nothing about Ben Habib claiming there was a million quid bribe paid to Farage and BoJo.
As average as Starmer is, he has actually done some decent work. My business colleagues who are to the right of center feel that the economy is doing OK, if not incredibly well. But a shit load better than it has been. We are doing OK. Biggest challenge to us is AI which Starmer can do fuck all about.
I suppose he’s to the right of the party, but at least you know that’s where he is. Can’t imagine he has massive support within the party. I’ve always liked him and have watched him progress. He’s always very good and quick thinking in interviews. He won’t appeal to the far left as he’s not seen as working class (maybe because he’s done well and is from London?!). But he was brought up in a single parent household and his grandad was an armed robber linked with the Krays and his grandma spent time in prison.
I think Burnham is the best candidate for taking on Farage and does also have appeal to the left but it’s going to be hard for him to even be considered.
Streeting would be better than Milliband and Rayner.
Little know Al Carns also said to be thinking of running. Hard bastard ex Royal Marine with voter appeal, but again unlikely to appeal to the party.
Why is this? I've been gone a long time, but Streeting seems a bit irrelevant as a politican. Is he more likely to avoid the worst of the press beat-up?
Irrelevant isn’t always bad as he’s not had the chance to show what he’s about. Oh he’d get beat up like any Labour politician. The homophobic slurs have started due to his association (which seems limited) with Mandleson. He’s a lot more charismatic than Starmer and has far more politcal nous. Milliband has failed before so little point in going back there and Rayner just won’t appeal in the slightest (mainly due to unfair attacks on her but sadly that’s where we are).
One of my brothers mates from Uni, Joe, is married to Wes Streeting.
They bought a couple of the spare tickets I had for Pulp in Sheffield a few years back. Had a couple of drinks with them before the gig and again after (also with the Sheffield MP (Louise something?) who was transport secretary for a bit at start of this parliament, though had no idea who she was at time).
