Son has moved back from Uni and is making me clear out the garage so he can have a gym in there - he has a weights bench, barbell, dumbells etc

The garage floor is concrete - is it sensible to get some of those rubber interlocking mats?

    Yes.

Isn’t he aware that you’ve been keeping things in there since you bought the place in case you may need them one day?

Depends why you want them. If he's got old fashioned steel or iron then it's a good idea as it will reduce the noise and the damage to the concrete that would be caused by him dropping them, but if they're vinyl covered plates it won't really make much difference. Much nicer underfoot though and it will help keep the place warmer for him.

So it may not be necessary, but it will be nicer if you do and have little downside. Are you planning to have a power rack in there or just a bench?

I'm not really sure what else he is getting, but he has been looking at weight racks so maybe.

Thanks all. I have ordered some mats, not for the whole side of the garage he is having, but a decent area. Will be nicer for sit-ups, press ups and the like.

If you're going to install a rack you need rubber rather than foam. Foam is squishier and increases the chances of doing something unpleasant to an ankle while under heavy load.

Also, if you get a rack you're going to want to drill into the concrete and bolt it down. You don't want it moving while you're trying to rerack a loaded bar.

    Exactly, Mrs Les is distraught

It's costing £500 to clear it too

Not to defend Mince, but Less did ask specifically about rubber mats and Mince said yes. I was just making the point that not all mats are made the same and that if he's lifting heavy, which 21 year old lads tend to do, then make sure you don't accidentally buy foam.

Thanks all. We will see how they are when they arrive, maybe use these for bodyweight and dumbbell stuff and get some rubber mats just for a station for the heavier weights on the bar.

He'll probably lose interest shortly after you've got all the kit. Or join the manosphere.

Gammon and Mince - series 3.
With Gammon's t-shirt printing company collapsing thanks to supply and demand, The Straights Of Hormuz, The Chancellor's tax and Russian interference our original Odd Couple decide to open a gym.

The AoNZ Deputy PM is a dead ringer for Gordon Brittas, except he's far more of a twat.

I was hoping that when mine go to Uni that will be the end of catering for their hobbies. We still have a sewing machine in front room that was used three times...
