A question about rowing machines, which I used today, but don't tend to bother with.

When you turn the dial thing in the middle, it makes it harder to pull the handles towards me, but does it increase my 'speed' over the distance that is shown on the display? Like I would expect it does. But I wasn't convinced it did. It felt like one pull/stroke = 50 metres*. Regardless of how hard or easy that pull was.

    • 50 metres used as example distance.

Assuming this is a concept 2 then no it doesn't. I forget the exact maths and mechanics but the higher the damper is set means it slows down quicker giving a higher drag factor and the deceleration between strokes is used to calculate speed. In theory it should take the same effort to to the same distance in the same time whether 1 or 10.

...so you are are looking to balance the resistance at what feels comfortable and sustainable, but challenging. I normally go for 8.

In other news get the app.

This is research because in a few weeks 16 of us are going to have competition to see who can row 1000m on the machine in the fastest time, and I'm unsure how to set the machine up for optimum results (for me).

I'm sure you want webmong input on this but 2k is standard competition/benchmarking distance.

    (7.13 thank you very much)

On the monitor there should be a drag factor option and you adjust this using the damper while rowing. When we did tests when I was rowing we were asked to set it to 120 (about setting 4). It was supposed to equalise everything across all rowers but it shouldn't make a difference.

2K? No thanks. This is one of about 14 events. If anything I’m pushing for it to be reduced to 500m.

Our gym had a 30 second race on the SkiErg, I left top of the leader board and came back the following day well trounced by 3 people. After a bit of investigation all 3 had broken the world record.

Aren't you a cardio king? What are the other 13 events and who are your competitors, are they all racing snakes?

You should mention the hotbed of local talent as part of your next presentation to get the Commonwealth Games to Radcliffe.

Ha. Thanks for the compliment, but not so much. I run regularly, and cycle regularly, but neither to any great standard. I also eat too much and drink too much. That said, I tend to finish upper mid table each year, and did win it a few years ago.

The total list of events so far is: Fantasy Football, Horse Racing (A pretend £60 to spend on 3 races), Pool, Table Tennis, Penalty Shoot Out, Basketball free-throws, Golf (Pitch n Putt), Darts, Sports Quiz, Dominoes, Ten Pin, Rowing, Swimming, Cycling.

My best events are Ten Pin and Pool. Though I should do well at cycling. There are some annoyingly fit people in it though. Couple of lads who are (still) in the army for instance, and another pair who are mid 30s rather than mid 40s which makes a hell of a difference.

"Welcome to the penultimate, possibly final, where on earth do we go next, Commonwealth Games in Radcliffe."

"For any event requiring equipment, or a hole in the ground with non-killer water in, please go to Cotgrave. We do."

Cotgrave proudly hosting the Pole Vault Over Our Massive COTGRAVE Road Sign (impossible) and the Rowing (also impossible as the water was pumped to extinguish this month’s church fire).

Ah right. I thought it was going to be like bench press, squat, deadlift, row, run, swim etc.

I remember doing something like this.
In my defence, I was 12!
