Not sure you are right - Kane 20m has followers on instagram. Mbappe 137m; Lamal 60m. You surely don't think England is "the most lucrative rights territory"?

  • 27 Oct 2026, 10:34 a.m.

Yeah I'm not having that. Kids in the Americas and Asia don't walk around in Harry Kane jerseys, but Lamal and Mbappe and Messi and Ronaldo are everywhere. Kane is not a marketing choice.

Listen, Tricky has clearly not slept since last nights result so I suggest you all give him a wide berth until he calms down. Granted, given the gravity of last night's vote that could take about a decade.

Kane is a great example of where good honest hard work and focusing on the mental side of the game can get you. He was never going to be the kind of player who runs in behind like Owen or dribbles past 5 defenders like Ronaldo/Ronaldinho of Brazil or Messi (if tricky was his coach he would have maxed out in league one). But he's a case study in incremental improvement, studying the game and thinking: if I work hard at X I can be better at X than anyone in the world, and maybe I can be a better player than anyone else in the world, and then working out what is X. He also wears a sensible suit, lets his hair and chin do it's own natural thing, and has a great general sensible wife rather than any nonsense.

Definitely (at least with measurable available historical data).

European club revenue set to top €30bn

English media rights have a substantial history of being at a substantial premium for all over territories - you pay more to watch football here, than anywhere else.

This is not a new, or vaguely controversial contention. Anyone who thinks that Messi was the best player in the world every time he won the trade award is clearly an idiot. In the same way that the music awards celebrate units shifted over quality of material - they are trade awards. Messi is the brand that most corporate partners want to be associated with, and he has the most global economic upside for rights holders. But even the trade realise that they can't keep pulling that crock of shit, the product is well past it's eat by date.

Harry Kane has remorselessly been promoted as a brand, most obviously with England - he has profile with the major rights markets (British, Champions* League), and globally as brand England. He's a sound commercial bet...unlikely to appear in videos being shat on by russian prostitutes and thus diminishing his market value. A suitable holding pattern until someone not black, or with a too foreign sounding name emerges from the commercial pack.

He's not even the best player in the teams he plays in, never mind globally.

    * Sic.

You can carry on or you can accept it with grace. The facts are nobody has come close to scoring 185 goals in the last 3 years for club and country. That's hasn't been powered by marketing and that is phenomenal.

Thank fuck for that. I was worried that Russ, who I usually agree with, had turned into the most insane fucker in this place but our Lord and Master has really stamped his authority on the title.

  • 27 Oct 2026, 12:42 p.m.

You must have missed the news - Kane doesn't play in the English league any more. There were only two English based players in the top 20 - if they wanted to market the premier league, wouldn't they have got a few more in just to make it seem stronger?

  • 27 Oct 2026, 1:04 p.m.

If they can remote programme you to walk around supermarkets how they want you to, and persuade you to vote to shoot yourself in the foot, you might want to broaden the perspective that you look at things from. It's not my job to join up the thinking for you.

So who is it that you have in mind as the English player, in the English league, that appeals to the champions league and their English rights market more than Kane?

Then you can have a think about what has happened to the 'English' league if you want.

  • 27 Oct 2026, 1:08 p.m.

Yet you seem to be doing it anyway?

  • 27 Oct 2026, 1:18 p.m.

    Apparently not. See above.

  • 27 Oct 2026, 1:30 p.m.

73 goals in 65 games in 25/26, and even without a single penalty he outscored every other player in the top 5 club leagues.

But it's all made up and manipulated anyway, isn't it? They should just convince the sheeple that Declan Rice or Saka would be deserving of the award. Arsenal won the league and made the champions league final, how hard could that be?

  • 27 Oct 2026, 5:28 p.m.

He doesn't play for England, but Haaland was born in Leeds and meets the implied Aryan ideal.

And I'm pretty sure that the vast majority of the kids around the world wearing Mbappe and Vini shirts didn't pay $100 a pop for them.

I dunno. Kane frustrates me because England don't use him wisely, not because he isn't brilliant. Seems a worthy winner of anything, really.

  • 27 Oct 2026, 6:46 p.m.

Seems a bit harsh on England. We do build the team structure around him, and play him for every single minute of every game.

He is brilliant, apart at the sharp and pointy win things end of tournaments. When we actually play someone decent.

  • 27 Oct 2026, 6:57 p.m.

England haven't won anything since 1966 . Interesting take that it's all Harry Kane's fault.
