I see Burnham has announced he's looking at lifting the ban on drinking in view of the pitch because it's out of date and discriminatory against football fans. Having experienced fans drinking in the stands in Europe, I don't think it's discriminatory at all, having been soaked by lager when MGW missed the penalty in Graz.

I guess it may not happen in the Trent End (although there are a few idiots who'll occasionally lob stuff towards the front of the stand), but I can see away games being a bit of a nightmare. There used to be a group who'd jump around in the concourse and lob their drinks in the air at half time (haven't seen them do it for a while; maybe the extraordinary price of beer has put them off), but no matter how "good" the stewarding is now compared to when the ban was implemented, they'll still lob pints in the stands.

They'll also have a handy receptacle for when they need a piss; aside from having piss lobbed at you, it also means that fewer goals will be scored as everyone knows teams always score when you go for a piss.

I'd rather be punched in the face, than drenched in beer - or worse. It's not something that will be luring me back to grounds...quite the opposite given the prominent herd behaviour of idiots.

    No he hasn't?

In principle it sounds fair. Why should rugby (or cricket) fans be able to drink in the stands when football fans can't? But we all know that the answer is that it would mean getting soaked in beer in certain areas of the ground, especially away ends.

He hasn't said the ban will be lifted, he just thinks it’s a stupid rule. Which on the face of it, it is. The football policing unit were very quick to basically say it needed to stay.

I’m not that arsed either way, I’m sure if the ban was ever lifted there would be a few beer throwers initially. But after a while it would stop. Probably after a beating or two.

We're all pretty civilised (and mostly regulars) in the TE upper so the chance of getting hit by a thrown beer is low. (Although there is always the odd idiot. ) but there is still a decent chance of accidental spillage. And you can't even twat the twat for that.

It's not so much deliberate throwing just that when a goal is scored everyone jumps up arms aloft and the beer flies all over the place.

Happened in every European away end where beer was served. The worst is getting covered for a goal that VAR then disallows.

This just doesn't happen in cricket or rugby.

I'm with Karl it's a firm no from me.

I'm also 100% against it for the reasons KM and JRC give. Also it's not like cricket where you're watching for 6 hours. What is the need for drinking in the stand?

    All good points.

TBH when I take the kids to the cricket I now go for the non alcohol section after a foul mouthed inappropriate group (around kids) ruining a game a couple of years back.

Language is much better, just have to watch out for the peados instead.

Thanks to the thread title I now have Islands In The Stream stuck in my head.

Obviously if I can fit more Madri into my big day out I am all for it and you are all homosexuals.

Happy to supply counter arguments on request as I am all for more booze.

And what would you do if you had a full pint in your hand, in your seat, if Forest scored? (not very likely at home I'll admit but purely hypothetically)

Find Tricky and pour it over his head.

  • 24 Sep 2026, 2:56 p.m.

Has anyone ever had a nice pint of beer at a football (or any other kind of sports) match?

I wouldn’t drink that bilge from its squidgy plastic glasses if it was free and I definitely don’t want some 20 year old bellend launching one over me when we accidentally VAR one in.

    This argument is bollocks.

At the Burnley game a steward came to bollock me for vaping. I wasn't vaping, I never have. I'm (well was) 43 years old and suck my thumb when I'm thinking. The point is, aside from this obviously ridiculous habit, is that any misdemeanour is picked up by what can't be far off the most technologically advanced surveillance system this side of Russia. The moment anyone chucks a Madri at Tricky they will be hauled out. The days of crowd anonymity at football are long gone.
