Why did they bid for it, or was it different government then?
Why did they bid for it, or was it different government then?
They didn’t bid. Nobody wanted it so they basically said ‘ok, we’ll do it as long as it’s cheap’.. and it’s blown out, cost wise, as these things do.
Arguably they should never have offered.. but we don’t know what went on behind the scenes to get them to. Cancelling and taking the political hit is a good thing though (if, indeed, it proves to be a net hit).
Would anyone outside athletics notice if the Commonwealth games didn't happen?
Apart from those people who think we don't need to deal with Europe, we can just do everything in the old empire instead. I say people, I mean furious wanking chimps.
Is there anywhere I can bet on it ending up back in the UK as we're the only mugs who have to pretend we still care?
There’s a lot of swimming too, I think. But indeed, whilst athletes may enjoy competing in it, and a lot of people get paid or perked as a part of it, I’ve not detected a whiff of any ordinary sports fan giving a tiniest fuck for an awful long time. Around me today, the main reaction to them not coming here was ‘I didn’t know they were being held here. Or what they are’.
Hard to imagine there is any other way that it happens. Maybe (hopefully) they’ll decide not to hold them and ‘take some time to reimagine the games for the next century’.. during which the last of the people who give a fuck can talk shit and collect their expenses until they die, and then the whole thing can be quietly forgotten. Now that the Queen is dead, I doubt that even the Tories would put much political capital into keeping shit like this afloat.. I don’t doubt that degradation in the status of the monarchy made it a slightly easier call for Australia/Victoria to bail on the games.
Someone at work played hockey for Wales at the last Commonwealth Games.
I know quite a few hockyists who have commenwealthed. I'm not sure I'd pay a billion quid for them to do it. They can get a game at Highfields. Griff will sort them out.
We had it in Birmingham last time. Completely took over the city and the university where I worked at the time. All our summer football was cancelled because they built a temporary hockey stand on our pitch. Load of bollocks.
I have spent month and months working on trying to get a contract over the line with a partner and they have been absolute cunts about it because they think we have no choice but to work with them, it's still not done and they're still quibbling about ridiculous things and I'm unbelievably frustrated with it. This week I have been presented with the opportunity and green light to work with an alternative provider and at first look over it seems like they can do everything we need. I'm already giddy for the moment I can message the first supplier and inform them that we're no longer interested in completing the contract with them, and will instead be giving over $5M a year to someone else.
On holiday in Bali, up in the northern hills. Ran into a local guy in a Forest shirt….
Had he gotten lost on the way to Orlando?
Could also go in what's scaring me sh!tless today, but accepted for voluntary redundancy.
First time I've left a job without another one waiting for me.
Best update my Linkedin. Anyone looking for a "communications expert"?
Best thing I ever did when I got it aged 30. I'd be a bit more worried it doing it now though tbh. But fuck it. Go for it.
I can make the first 4 home games, been a while, shame 50% of them are against Burnley mind.
I presume Burnley will also be classified as a 'Category 1' game for some reason.
Cat 2 for the league, cup game TBC.
