The Tory economic miracle has delivered 1000% increase in interest rates in a year, against the historical decade long mean. Alongside a substantial drop in standard of living, with an effective doubling of costs.

It's a brave man who assumes that they are done with us. After all, some of us still have some stuff and can afford to eat without taking a second job with Amazon during the night.

You know they are going up everywhere else too, right? It’s not about the tories, it’s about the system. There has been an ocean of cheap money flowing since the GFC. Most of it flowed to the wealthy and connected, but the only tool any western economy wants to use to suck some of it back up is interest rates.. that hit us all far more broadly. A different rosette in No10 would make precisely zero difference to interest rates.

Stimulus during Covid meant there were mortgages available at 2% here. Today the best rates are around 5.5% and that’s without a recent rise getting priced in.

The Tories have held power since the GFC and chosen to do nothing to head off the inevitability of what is happening now. But neither have the governments of all the other countries doing the same thing. Trying to pin this on Tories is exactly the sort of misdirection you’d be spitting blood about if it were them doing it. It is very much ‘look over here, not over there’.

It’s not the government. It’s the system.

The interest rate. My mortgage has gone up by over £700 in 6 months.

£700 a month? Fucking hell that is tough.

Our fix expires next year. Really looking forward to it.

This is also me, ours is May. Trying to prepare for it now. According to the calculators we're look at another £600 or so. Although I'm with Russ, I won't be surrendering any extra cash.

Ours is July, we want to move so may go on SVR, but given the SVR now we may have to fix again and try and port it with us.

I am scared to look at the extra cost. At least £400 I would guess.

Our 1.25% fix ended in February. Went onto a 2 year tracker (0.25 above base rate) as we intend to sell in 6-10 months and if I'd done a fix the early repayment charges would have hammered us. Plus the 3 year fix we were being offered was 4.4% or something like that. Our current rate is 5.25% ish.

I missed out on the great fixed rates because I was in limbo waiting for the new place to finish construction.. it was done, and my old place sold, just in time for the new world. I fixed for a year to December kinda expecting things to have stabilised by now, but will take a bit of a hit. Mainly I am glad that I am massively debt averse and therefore didn’t leverage up too much when I moved. I could have been looking at double the mortgage I ended up with.

Historically, the best way to choose between fixing and not has been to do whatever I didn’t. The upside has been modest, but this latest one has been the first time that I’ve come out better off from my choice.

Split mortgages are common here.. so a lot of people fix a portion and keep a portion on a variable with offset (as have I) so there’s no dilemma when it comes to paying extra on the mortgage vs keeping liquidity.

Our new mortgage rate will be 7.5%. Not sure what you lot are moaning about?

I paid off my mortgage in 2019. Suckers!

I'm also currently living with my mum. Age 40.

Blimey. You paid your mortgage off in 2019 and your mum's only 40?

    Impressive.

I'm annoyed with myself that I'm missing nffc news. I really don't want a transfer season like last year, but I'm ready for some rumours about early activity.

I guess the macron deal expires at the end of the month. Club shop is currently shut, presumably for rebranding.

It actually expires in a couple of years but we’ve ended it early.
