Coterill is too low if you include the O’Driscoll period. He was dealt a shit hand by the McClaren/Doughty departures, it was shit for ages and I think he set a club record for consecutive games without scoring but it picked up once SOD (and Geddy) turned up and he kept us up easily in the end.

I am biased towards Cotterill as I used to watch him at Burton Albion, before he was sold to Wimbledon (I think)

I will always remember Cotterill for Leeds 3 Forest 7. The 13th anniversary of which was 8 days ago.

My recollection is that Moreno was shot and totally unsuited to the blood-and-thunder of the first division, Petrachi was talented but completely disinterested, but Matrecano looked decent until he fucked his knee.

I'm not the incredible memory man, but wasn't it Mannini? Who, I believe, came at almost zero cost to us. As you say Matrecano was excellent, no previous bad injury record, just unluckily picked up a bad one with us. Petrachi was brilliant, but didn't fancy the job. It happens. I don't think the cost to the club was as large as the popular perception of the time.

Scimeca caught a bit of guilt by association despite being good, actually.

Mattson was already there (and permanently crocked) by the time Platt arrived.
Stern John was the Holy Grail of transfers of the Platt era.

What SOD did have was Sharpe and Cox, who were starting to look a real threat.

He also brought us the magnificent James Coppinger in his attempt to turn us into Rotherham with a bigger stadium. Dark, dark days.

Wasn't that part of operation 'buy players who play well against us so they can't play well against us even if they are shit for us'?

Thankfully that had stopped before Matt Smith.

You're correct. I've a feeling his first name might have been Moreno?

Possibly. I don't remember his first name. I only remember how slow he was.

And he looked ancient, which in footballing terms he was - he made his senior debut in 1980 and by the time he joined us was going into his 19th year of professional football in one of the fastest and most physical leagues in the world. No wonder he immediately broke down.

I remember being at Portman Road on opening day when Mannini made his debut. David Johnson handed his arse to him that day - scored twice I think. Couldn't get near him.
