I’m happy to go on record as saying that I would have been totally ok with him being seriously hurt or worse. No, I don’t think shooting political opponents is good.. but he’s embraced violent people and ideologies and if he becomes a victim of that sort of thing then.. y’know.. kinda low on the list of things to give a fuck about. And I would just love it if at least one prominent political opponent of his would come out and say that (you can bet that they’re all thinking it).

Whatever you think of Trump, having a presidential candidate assassinated in the most powerful democracy in the world would not be good at all for liberal democracy and political stability. The country is already on a knife edge, it's a conspiracy-theory-riddled, gun-heavy, culturally-divided massive nuclear power which fortunately has, at least so far, had a sufficiently robust constitutional structure to keep the nutsies in check (even when they have become President). Civil war in the US is not a far-fetched fantasy and its in all the world's interests for this not to escalate. I wouldn't want to live there, but the fact is chaos in the US would be a big problem for the whole planet, and plausibly an existential one. Biden's reaction to this so far has seemed to shown him at his best: measured, sensible and non-partisan.
