When you’re talking about people like Gimènez, none of us wants to admit the truth, namely that we have not a scooby.

I'm quite happy to admit I know nothing about players I've never heard of, nor seen.

Totally agree that it's almost impossible to know how a player will do in completely different circumstances, with completely different teammates, playing to a completely different system and objectives. I've been making the same point here for years.

I'd like to think I can look at a player and see what he can do where he is....but the whole reason big clubs let little clubs try to establish outside players at this level is so that they don't have to. It's almost impossible to tell how well a player will be able to do something that they haven't done yet. Only a rare genius like Peter Taylor could do that.

Given the lifestyle change, the football change, the physicality, and often the weather change, almost all players new to here take some time to settle and find the level. If they are going to at all. Generally at least a year. Of those that we are identifying as 'a success', how many have been fully up and running within a year?

Obviously if a player is miles above the level, they can look great even while adjusting and coming up to speed. Given the standard in the 'ship that doesn't happen often..... And it happens slower the fewer peer role models available to set the standards for the level.

I'm also happy to admit I don't have a scooter about Gimenez.

I don't think goals scored care of shite goalkeeping is a telling metric, one way or other. A lot of goals (most?) are scored as a result of keeper or defender errors at every level, including the Premier league. Witness Son's goal against Pickford on Saturday or Mangala's goal against Emi Martinez the self-professed best keeper in the world last season.

    Leverkusen might be more appealing.

I've been beating this drum a while, but rather than spend £25-30m on someone likely untried in the PL I'd much rather we spent £8-9m on Adebayo from Luton. He scored 10 goals in 28 games last season. They're currently in the Championship relegation zone. There's surely a deal to be done and we already know he can score at this level.

He's just a battering ram though. There's a reason nobody good wants him.

Signing Kristian Fletcher, a young forward on loan from DC United, which is an odd one. Played last season for Swansea U21s, but not sure why DC would loan us him to play in our Academy. Plays for the US U21s and made 13 MLS appearances this season.

I assume we’re doing a favour for someone who wants him to be home grown in English football. (Which requires him to be at an English or welsh club for three years before he’s 21, in august 26.)

Given the Washington owner part owns Swansea, wouldn't he just go back there?

Sounds like Gimenez not dead and buried yet according to Dutch press.

This feels very much like the Sangare saga this time last year.

I’ve just left a meeting in Leiden with a Sparta Rotterdam fan. He is extremely disparaging about Gimenez. Extremely. Not because he plays for Feyenoord but because he thinks he’s fairly shit, lazy, has a half-decent highlights reel and he doesn’t believe anyone would pay £30m for him.

So that means he’s coming, right?

Nope, Fab says it’s off again. He’s not coming.

Might be a blessing, not seen or heard too much to get excited about regarding him.
