I don’t remember if it was discussed at the time but the Watford fans commenting in T’Athletic do not seem fond of Dennis at all, and don’t think he’s the sort of character they need around.
I agree with the sentiment about MGW but I'm not sure our PSR improves dramatically straight off the bat. Obviously we sold Johnson, but we also spent about another £100M that is going into our amortisation charge. To round the numbers neatly, say we got £50M for Johnson and spent £100M we have a roughly £25M increase in amortisation and an improvement in finances of £25M from the net profit of those two things. We also added some big wages, but that would be partly offset by wages lost. But we also failed PSR this year and we don't know how much by yet, so we probably have some ground to catch up over the next 3 year cycle, even though we have another PL allowance of £35M if we stay up, dropping off a Championship year. I think we passed the threshold for that Championship year though, so we are losing a profit year, albeit much smaller numbers. Then next year, we have another of those £25M amortisation charges but no Johnson to sell, so we are worse off year on year and need to fill the gap again. Over that 2 year period the Johnson money is effectively completely swallowed up by increased amortisation. It gets complicated very quickly and if you keep spending you end up chasing your tail.
That depends on how far over the threshold we were in 22-23, shirley? We know we were always pretty much on the limit in the championship, so it's safe to assume that 21/22 and 20/21 were both £13m losses (allowing for whatever fuckery there was for Covid). Which means the problem is 22-23, which makes sense as that's when our always eccentric recruitment got really expensive as well. Any loss over the £35m for 22-23 is going to have to be made back in the current season (obviously selling Brennan helps but paying off Shelvey and god knows who else doesn't).
Incidentally, I hope we aren't pinning our defence entirely on the idea we could have sold Brennan in June because, errr, we didn't. I'm sure our our KC knows what he's doing but, to me, a stronger defence would be to point out it's our first offence, link it to the challenge of being unprepared for promotion, in terms of recruitment as well as everything else, and promise we'll be well within the limits for 21-24 (which would explain our current restraint). Best case we get away with a small (to zero) deduction this season and a larger suspended one for the next couple.
Or we could go in and put them straight that everyone loves Forest and we are not a bunch of moaning scouse bastards. Bring up Ivan Toney trying to style out yet more cheating and maybe mention the European Cups (2). Also tell them it's nice by the river, looks good on telly and how big we are in Kuwait.
Dan Taylor hinting that Gio Reyna will be the first victim of the new friendship between EM and Mendes. Just found out his dad is Claudio who, as I remember it, was shit.
