My guess is that without a settled place in the side, a move that guarantees him starting for the rest of the season is pretty attractive to help his chances of being selected for the Euros.
Murillo was very good, considering the scrutiny he was under, last night. Danilo was ok (he had our only shot in the first hour and played the ball for Montiel for the goal among other contributions.
I don't disagree with this at all, although I think Danilo is starting to show signs of having played through the worst of his run of form and going in the right direction again. I thought he was decent yesterday.
But Murillo is a fuckin joy. I don't get the comment about living on past glories at all. I think he gets better by the game, and this from a pretty high starting position. Considering he hasn't played a full season yet (anywhere), I think we have a hell of a footballer on our hands. Struggling to think of a better defender that we've had since prime Des.
That is just a stinkiest turd contest, but yeah I hoped Pliers with 5 years experience as Benfica number 1 and 150 odd games in a top European league might be better than awful. Whether he is or not is marginal on evidence to date, but the pertinent point is they are both dreadful players and we were mugged. Johnstone has looked vaguely competent as a Premier league keeper and solid as a championship one, which should be better than what we have. Lunatic isn't coming back any time soon.
He's a great find, but I don't think he's the Messiah as half our fanbase seem to. Yes, he can pass a ball and he put in a lot of decent blocks last night, but his positioning (which should improve), strength and aerial ability are highly questionable.
My point is, because he made an impression early on and went on a mazy run which ended with a woeful shot, his (plentiful) mistakes are ignored and he is lauded.
Worrall could put in an identical performance and he'd be slaughtered for not being good enough.
Tis the world we live in now, everything is black or white, there is no grey, and people pick and choose the evidence which supports their point of view.
I think that even in his raw state there's a way that you could set up to have him be very effective (which is high praise indeed considering his inexperience, and the level that we are operating at). I'm pretty sure that operating as one of a two, defending deep around our box, isn't it.
There aren't many centre halves good enough to be premier league starter at 21. He's brilliant for his age, even if you discount the odd bit of jaw-dropping, show-boating stuff he does. He is also strong as an ox, and stronger than an oxo cube.
Russ comment about Mangala being tidy is about right. Handy to have about but not a defensive titan nor a progressive wizard. Tidy. Getting excellent profit for him is fine if we need to invest.
Also, team Murrilo. Still has errors in him, he's 21, but also factor in those sprints back to make a perfect tackle or block on the line. You might argue that he shouldn't have had to have made those recovery runs but when his positionig does improve, we will still have that recovery capability as well.
We're still (for now) in the Premier league. Murillo and MGW are probably the only two players on our books who with a fair wind I could see one day playing regularly at top 4 sides. Murillo has Man City signing of the future written all over him.
