If you put a burger between two slices of bread, then is it a sandwich?

    Yes.
A sliced loaf of bread is also a sandwich.

Did Tricky let RichB back onto the old board to hasten it's demise by pissing off the lingering holdouts? The wily old goat.

According to the kids and teenagers at work (and we all know Gen Z are the experts in everything) two slices of bread make one sandwich, cut it in half and it's half a sandwich.

Anything not made with slices of bread has it's own name and therfore is not called a sandwich (ie hotdogs, burgers etc) but it is possible to have a burger sandwich.

I'm not convinced. That may work for yer homemade sandwich, or even yer shop-bought sandwich in a triangular package. But what about the buffet situation? If you put one triangular egg and cress, one cheese and pickle, and one smoked salmon and cream cheese on the same plate, and take them back to your table, how many sandwiches have you got? 1.5? No, surely you have three sandwiches. Context is everything.

I suspect that a satisfactory definition is going to prove as elusive as for the 'curry'.

(I think) I made curry for tea - with accompanying dal/daal/dhal and a bit of lime pickle.

I'm with Florist on this. Each individual sandwich is a sandwich. Cut one sandwich in half and you have two sandwiches.

    That's a sandwich.

    It's three sandwiches.

It's a sandwich. Cut into three bits.

You can't break the universal laws of conservation of sandwich...you don't make more just by splitting the sandwich.

Of course you do. A sandwich is not a specific measure of size or mass or volume.
