Before VAR you get away with that 9 times out of 10. But in the video world we live in now you've no chance (and she should know it).

I read it as more of a ‘hold steady and wait for a bit of pressure, then make damn sure the ref knows there was ‘contact’’. There was enough contact to go down, maybe enough momentum coming from the defender to make it a foul, but the manner of the fall suggesting it was always the plan.

I am, however, not especially qualified to account for the technicalities of where weight/momentum/etc will lead things. If I was a ref, I would be shite.

Yeah. Dumb as a brick. People are weird sometimes.

It's in the opinion of the referee (which was foul, until they started chatting with the broom cupboard friends).

For me - is the action a foul - yes. Has the player being fouled committed an offence to get into that position - No, players are entitled to stand where they want, and move or not move how they want to. How they then fall over or not, should be irrelevant (though we know that referees don't make decisions unless you go to ground).

Not sure it's weird - she's young, she was frustrated by not really being in the game and irritated when the girl stopped her from getting straight back up. Without VAR (as almost all her previous games would have been), she'd have taken the booking and it would have been forgotten about.

She’s a professional footballer in a World Cup knockout game. That’s violent conduct and ‘I was frustrated’ or ‘I usually would get away with it’ doesn’t wash. It’s not as if her usual games are without cameras and scrutiny.. pro players in England will know there will be consequences for that (during or post-match) so, yeah, weird. We don’t see that sort of thing very often because not being prone to doing it is one of the big reasons players like her are where they are.

It’s only Beckham weird though. Not Zidane/Suarez/Cantona batshit-weird.

Wait 'till he finds out what they are up to within the 90 minutes....

...but... But... they came from IFAB / FIFA (or so we were told).

It's perfectly sensible to punish a player for taking eight seconds to take a throw in, while referees stop the game for several minutes to form a committee to discuss backing up the referees wrong decision. I'm sure that johnny foreigner will change the error of their ways when they've had time to think about it properly.

    It's Brexit all over again.

Interestingly, or not, UEFA recently launched a campaign to encourage more people to take up the whistle.

It doesn't strike me as very convincing, so here's five real reasons to be hated by all of football, and most of society.

    1. Every incident in a football game is judged on the basis of the opinion of the referee. Feel the power. Perfect for little Hitlers everywhere.
    2. Talking about Hitler, say what you will about the Nazi's but they knew how to put together a uniform. Referees duds are the next best thing. At least without getting you deported from Germany.
    3. There are limited opportunities for the visually impaired, but refereeing comes with fame, travel, excellent pay, and great expenses. You don't have to actually see things. Just have a best guess, and your mates will back you up.
    4. Excellent prospects of promotion. Recent developments have led to nearly four times as many officials as they were. More chiefs than Indians at this rate! The absolute knockout is that none of you will really have to make any decisions. Nothing hard, or unpopular in Manchester, at least.
    5. Did I mention the pay? Money for old rope when you can just make it up as you go along. Don't worry about any scrutiny or consequences. None of us want that shit going down. We've got your back. Just keep playing until we get the result we want, and you're cushty.

I have been applying No.3 to my own career with varying degrees of success since 2003.

Most of it has applied at some point or another except for the fame bit.
