He hasn't. But I'm now looking for us to take the next step, and I'm not sure he's the guy.

    Charlton say 'hi'.

    Good comparison Sean.

    So does Houghton.

We've had beneficial draws partly because we've pissed qualifying and, generally, the groups.

So did Spain. Their route to the final has involved France, Germany and Italy. All winners in recent times. Luck of the draw.

Not just luck; if the group stages had gone according to seeding, England’s half of the draw would have been tougher. It’s not Southgate’s fault that some other countries stuffed up their group.

It is fortunate for him, though. Quite lucky, really.

Or just more competent than many of his opponents. After all, if England had stuffed up their group, they’d have been in the “difficult” side of the draw. But they didn’t

I can't help thinking that this would be a very different conversation had Bellingham not equalised in the 95th minute v Slovakia.

Sure, but he did. No manager presides over a reign of total domination in every game. The best teams find ways to win. We do that.

Early favourite to replace Southgate is Eddie Howe.

No way he’s leaving Newcastle for England.

He's been very coy about ruling it out in recent interviews.

The other name I see is Lee Carsley, the current U21s coach. No idea if that would be a good hire, but it seems like quite an uninspiring one.

I've been thinking of the range of attributes that I perceive would be important in the next england manager - factoring in relevant experience, cost, availability, broad acceptance, and style of play....and the name that I came up with was Frank Lampard. So plenty of scope to be ridiculed for that one.

How does Lampard fit the criteria of "broad acceptance"? Most people would hate that appointment.

Also I'm not sure why you'd care about cost. There's no PSR in international football and the FA is richer than God.

Does Frank Lampard have a style of play? And broad acceptance seems optimistic.
