It was so much worse than that. As the ball was played down the full back channel Montiel left that area, and made a run into the box to find acres of space. I doubt that anyone, least of all him, could tell you why. Certainly if one the tuesday night mongs defended like that, the conversation would go something like "What the fuck was that? What's quite promising about this game is if we keep this up and stay level, we have Elanga and Awoniyi we could bring on for the last half hour and they are fucking good options (who of course dismantled Chelsea last time). I suspect Thiago Silva won't enjoy that.
