We would be idiots to let Sangare go. He was looking good vs Brentford and had his moments vs Palace (apart from the rugby conversion).

    1. Nico D: still injured
    2. Luiz. Hopefully will turn out to be the Villa Luiz. We don't know how long it will take for him to get back to that level.
    3. Yatesey. Not a starter in this team.
    4. MGW has demonstrated against Brentford (Yarmoliuk nearly scored) and Palace (Sarr did score) that his control in his own 1/3rd does not make him a deep lying midfielder

Josh Doig (23yo left back, presumably no relation to the legend Christophe Diog) and Nicolo Savona (22yo right back), who seem to be our back up full backs.

    Looks sensible. Dull, even.

Romano says we've turned down a request from West Ham to loan Sangare with an option to buy, and we're only open to either a permanent deal for a sizeable fee or a loan with an obligation to buy.

I don't know why you've all fallen so deeply in love with Sangare. He's had a raft of injury problems, he's played about three decent games for us, he's going to AFCON, and he's not first choice with a fit squad. I would absolutely take the right offer for him.

Luiz and Anderson are both better players but I’m not convinced they’ll work together without someone behind them. If we can make any profit on Sangare and get someone else in to do his job, I’m on board.

Dominguez is my first choice alongside Anderson. Luiz is backup to Anderson, he isn't the kind of player to do the dirty work in front of the back 4.

A very small number of us saw the story (new country, fitness, malaria!, form, rapid changes etc) and believed in the player's abilities despite this, and really want a completion of the arc. Personally I love his style of play, striding languidly across a midfield like pre-death (this I learned) Papa Bouba Diop. Some players seem more charismatic than others, and Sangare really works for me.

  • 27 Aug 2025, 8:25 p.m.

Oh, we're doing the old "you're just not smart enough to see why he's good" thing now, are we? If you want to play that game then I told you a few days ago that I thought we had one too many players in that position and that Sangare was the likely casualty, and based on the latest news it seems that our personnel team agree. Maybe you should tell them why they're wrong.

  • 27 Aug 2025, 8:31 p.m.

No. We're not doing that at all. I totally understand why people don't rate him, or see him as a write-off. I thought I was clear that this was just my personal view based on story and perceived potential. And I, personally, will be sad if we bin him off. I think it's also fairly fucking obvious that Sangare would be the sacrifice for Luiz, if there was to be one. Even I thought so (and expressed my disappointment).

Unless you aren't talking about me, in which case, go off, cowboy.

Not sure how else this was supposed to be read.

We can all see his abilities. He's obviously a good player. He's just not one that can be particularly relied on based on the evidence so far and the known fact that if he's healthy he's going to be gone for a third of the season, and he's not really anything special - he doesn't dominate a game like a Makalele or an Essien, he's just a tidy defensive midfielder. If someone wants to give us what we paid for him we should be thanking them very much.

  • 27 Aug 2025, 9:03 p.m.

Well, I just meant it wasn't a popular opinion and I liked the story. But still, go off cowboy.

It's not (at least not for me) that I think Sangaré is amazing, though I think he is decent. My issue is that Luiz may or may not prove to be the Villa version, and even if he is the Villa version he can't play 60-odd games. I am a huge Domínguez fan, but he is still some way off being fit, let alone match fit.

I just don't want to get rid of Sangaré & then find ourselves 5 or 6 weeks down the line with a Luiz who is not yet up to speed, or is injured, or both, before Nico D is ready... leaving us with Yatesey as the only defensive midfield player just as we start the Europa Thu-Sun grind. Anderson is amazing, but he cannot play everywhere, every game, or both.

If the club think Nico D is closer than he appears from outside, and/or have a Sangaré replacement lined up, then I have absolutely no issue with moving him on now (even though I have liked what I have seen in recent games at the end of last season & the start of this). Failing that, I think I'd rather wait until January or next Summer.

From the outside, it feels an un-necessary risk - but we are not familiar with all the moving parts, and could not influence them even if we were familiar. We simply have to hope that the club know what they are doing with this one.

Oh, and please accept my apology for being unclear

  • 28 Aug 2025, 10:26 a.m.

I see West Ham have agreed a fee of £38M for Fernandes. I imagine this cools their ardour for Sangare?

  • 28 Aug 2025, 10:27 a.m.

That feels alot to me. But I guess they're a bit desperate.
