Worth pointing out that Spurs have the 9th biggest turnover of any club in the world, United 4th. Pretty obvious that finishing 17th and 16th would lead to a massive spending spree - if you supported those clubs, you’d demand it.

Ornstein saying our bid for Wissa is less than the £25m we offered in January, while they still want £50m.

Now, I hope we don’t go anywhere near that asking price but I struggle to understand the strategy, unless we are hoping he forces the issue somehow?

Jordan Henderson signs for Brentford, so moves from “god, I hope not” to “how did we miss out on him”.

There’s a third option, namely “bullet dodged”, which is definitely where I sit. He won’t be useless & I can see why a new manager might welcome sone leadership in the dressing room, but I can’t see a space for him in our team

I do need my socks blowing off pretty fucking soon

I think the loss of Elanga and MGW might force us to play a less chaotic/counterattacking game. Given that a lot of teams had figured us out towards the end of the season, this may not be a bad thing.

    Guru: straw clutching.

I agree. Personally I think the main reason for the reaction (over-reaction, in my view) of most fans is the fact that no-one was aware of this bloody release clause - unsurprisingly; it’s not the sort of thing the club would want to trumpet around. So from our perspective the MGW thing went from “Spurs are sniffing” to “he’s having a medical tomorrow” in what felt like about 25 minutes.

    Plus it’s Spurs, obvs.

But the bottom line is that clearly MGW wasn’t interested in signing a new deal, and let’s face it the list of people who could alert Spuds to the clause consists of 2 people (MGW & his agent), so it’s pretty apparent that he doesn’t want to stick around.

The club might still have hoped to change that, obvs, but given the Tuchel-whisperer, WC year & CL football, that was always a long shot.

Given all that, this is the window in which to sell him, painful though that might be; a year from now no-one is paying £60m for him with 1 year left, & there’s even the risk that in extremis he might run the contract down to zero. Some clubs might be able to do that with prized assets, but Forest aren’t among them (not with MGW - if CHO doesn’t sign there’s a case for keeping him for his final year, because the numbers are so low).

He’s a very good player who has been crucial to how we play. But he is not irreplaceable; no-one is.

We’ve banged on about the “Brighton model” for long enough; it’s pretty fucking dumb to throw our teddies out of the pram when we get to the “selling a valuable player” phase of that model.. because that’s exactly what the model entails.

It all depends on how we spend the money. That will happen.

I think this is the most amusing thing of the fanbase meltdown on the socials.

Lots of talk over the past few years (pre-PL, too) about how Forest should 'model themselves on Brighton' in terms of going up, staying up, recruiting really well and selling players at peak value.

Our lot have started the intense bet-wetting over the last part, which is kind of crucial to the model.

A few probably need reminding that, shit as it is to see your best players cherry-picked by the big boys, at least we had some which clubs wanted to pay £50-60m for in the first place. That's down to strong initial recruitment. It's also the same for all provincial clubs these days.

We could be Derby, of course, and wetting the bed instead with excitement at the prospect of seeing Carlton Morris start up front at Stoke on the opening day.

Not sure that scenario is all that extremis, tbh, we will absolutely have tried to get him to sign a new deal to get that release clause gone, and he’s obviously decided to keep his options open. That’s smart.. no pay rise today, but a great position from which to get things sorted tomorrow. That’s the approach of someone who’s probably not at all averse to running down his deal. As it is, he’ll have captured a chunk of the value he has over that £60m in his new deal with Spurs.

Gutted to lose him for cheap, and to Spurs. But delighted we had him and wish him all the best. We can either have great players who keep getting nabbed by the rich boys.. or we can have shit players and be shit.

I think fans are perfectly ok to be pissed off that after our best season for many many years we have sold our better two players, for what many regard under the going rate. And all we have signed is an unknown from Brazil.
