I would like suggestions of both main and sub-categories, for how we might reasonably sort posts in the category view. I would like the main categories to be broad brush stroke without fine grained niche categorisation. Sub categories should provide a bit more of that fine grained sort.

There will only one level of sub-category.

Short pithy name/descriptions of categories work best....although longer options (eg "fuckwittery") will be considered if they have special merit.

Main categories: Posts. That's it. Just Posts.

    Sub categories: None.

Pointless filing for the sake of pointless filing. Way too small and too little volume to make this anything other than unnecessary clutter.

Except I'd like to file support/tech requests. I'd like to sort for match threads. I'd like to be able to find little used stuff, that is of periodic use (like new balls please) without having to search through loads of posts, and by broad subject matter.

You don't have to use them. Just use threads, one long unsorted list of threads. In time posting time order.

Is that not what the search function is for?

No, that's for finding things that you can't easily find, rather than listing like things together for convenience.

    Match Threads
    Forest
    Football
    Other Sport
    Advice
    Ingo’s Nonsense
    Quiz’

I disagree with Russ on this one. I can see value and would probably use them.. and don’t see any downside or anything that gets in the way of people who don’t want them.

    Something like that?

We can use the category for general stuff, or the category sub-category where it specifically fits.

This is a discussion, not a mandate. I'm looking for the most general, but simple scheme, that people would possibly find useful.

    What's the difference between 2.1 and 2.3?

You might choose to categorise something about a specific club, eg palearse sacking viera, as being about a specific club.

you might choose to categorise infantino deciding to admit all footballing nations to the world cup finals as football news.

Dunno if we generate enough cONteNt for that level.. but that whole schema seems about right. Perhaps add one for Politics/serious affairs? Could be a sub of discuss but might merit a stand-alone tag.

Is this really necessary, the current board has multiple boards, for its entire history , except for a brief period last year spearheaded by one individual we have only used one 'channel' now were adding categories, to what effect?

it's an ageing population, lets face it @Shady and Ingo represent the youth movement, why this desire to make it more complicated, which will likely only add to the "category police" complaining that your post isn't valid as it doesn't comply with the correct category - who needs the added arguments?

Not to mention agents of chaos deliberately mis-categorising posts with the express intention of annoying people who want to search by categories. (Not that I would do such a heinous thing, obviously.)

Lets imagine there is a brilliant array of categories, that some people use, and others don't, and others still go to great effort to mischievously misuse them. Like retarded teenagers (not a criticism, I know we have a few).

The thread view will still work exactly the same.

You are literally putting more effort into being middle aged and pointlessly resisting change, than it will cost you in effort over the course of your lifetime.

Just ignore it, if you want. That will be broadly the same as it not being there. Give or take.

For some people, like me, it might be useful.

Another reason why categories are stupid / won't work: there's no way of categorising posts after they've been made, so if a topic goes off in a different direction (as is Talkback's way) you can't add a subsequent category tag to identify it as such. At least general users can't, which means that it will have to be done by moderators and admins, and I'm pretty sure that moderators aren't going to bother, so basically you will have to.

This is therefore a filing system that exists purely for you to operate, from deployment to benefit. Which is fine, if that's what you want.
