That's more or less how I see it too although wouldn't be banking on 5th.
Opta doesn't account for injuries and form so purely on the sight test of recent games of those at the top, I'd say we're in a shoot out for 5th/6th/7th with Chelsea and Villa, any outcome of which means guaranteed European football next season. So all good.

I am the only person who is struggling to put a brave face on the FACT that we are going to blow the top 5 finish in the final weeks of the season? Honestly I'm going to be absolutely gutted if we don't make it now.

I'll be super disappointed if we don't get into the champions league (especially if we also don't win the cup). But I can still put it in the broader context of August me thinking I'd gone crazy if he'd known I'd be pissed off with finishing 6th or 7th.

It would seem a shame but I also don't see how we manage to compete on two fronts next year. We don't have a great squad, just a good first team and likely to lose some of that team in the summer.

I just want to go and watch forest in Europe again, somewhere, in any tournament. Still worrying we're gonna miss out on that!

If Newcastle finish above us, that puts the Europa conference into league placing. So 5 CL+1Europa league (2, if City or Villa win the cup and qualify otherwise through the league) + 1 europa conference.

Realistically, 7th guarantees us Europe, 8th gets us into Europe unless Palace win the cup. And it could go lower if Villa win the CL and finish below 5th and/or Chelsea win the EL and finish below 5th.

    Well summarised

A European place of any description would be beyond any of our expectations 6 months ago.

A CL place has always seemed fanciful. Our small squad and limited bench options when compared to all the others are really striking. However a CL place means we are more likely to sign better players and retain some of our existing ones.

I couldn't be more relaxed about it. I'd have snapped the hand off anyone in August offering me lower mid-table. All I hoped for was that Forest might be safe by Easter and it would then be fascinating to see what this group could do playing a handful of games for the first time in two and half years without any pressure of relegation.

What's happened instead is remarkable and try as I might, I just can't get animated at the prospect we might slip out of the Champions League places or lose an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. The Premier League is played out over nearly 40 very difficult rounds of contest and if there are five better teams than us by match week 38, so be it. Has still been one hell of a season - this group is talented and eminently likeable (which is a rarity).

I will be. I get why many are suggesting it’s been a great season regardless but I can’t see where we will have a better chance of CL football again.

The potential of trips to Milan, Madrid and Paris. To watch Forest.

I’m not sure why you are wetting your panties. Unless you really believed the hype? See how every analysis is now an “I told you so..”

Villa bought in Asensio, Rashford and Malen in January, to allow Englands number 2 striker to warm the bench. Newcastle have a wealth of talent on their bench all of . City casually spend a fuckton on Nico, Khusanov and Marmoush (the latter would have been a generational signing for us) and Chelsea. Well Chelsea. They are all bringing AK47s to our plastic knife fight. Our squad is overachieving and now injuries have hit to key players, we are struggling.

And I’m not sure I would want to pay a lot of money to go to Madrid, Munich or Paris to watch us get buttfucked. I’d rather go to Dukla Prague away (kit)….

All very sensible but I’ll still find it disappointing if we miss out.

Are 6th and 7th Europa? Or is one the conference league?

I'm fine with finishing lower than we currently are, but I would definitely be happier with Champs League.

Would this be crudely analogous to getting rejected by all but your least favourite Spice Girl?

Errr…it would be like being at a club where the Spice Girls were hanging out and thinking you were in with a chance.

Getting top 7 means we're definitely getting a Spice Girl. Finishing 17th means we haven't been kicked off the yacht.

You know there were only 5 Spice Girls, right?
