Danny Murphy basically just said it should have been red. But then said Madisons nice guy persona made him get away with it, which is mental, as Madison has never been a nice guy

I've just watched it for the first time other than live. It's really soft . I'd struggle to even call it a punch.

That aside, Madison is a diving cunt who got Yates booked way earlier than he should have been. They really targeted Yates from the start. Which is a sign of how shit a club they are.

It was, though, soft or not. And you can't do that.

Clear what Maddison was doing, i.e. he didn't accidentally catch Yates. It should have been a red card. You surely can't decide it was 'mild violet conduct' and play on?

This is where I am on it. Ridiculously soft but if you lose control enough to aim a ‘punch’ then you deserve to be sent off.

Yates’s problem, as Russ has already said, is that refs are fed up with his constant snide pushing and fouling, so he’s not going to get much sympathy. He was booked for his 4th foul yesterday, then was largely a passenger as he could t make a tackle. He’s a waste of a shirt when he plays like that.

He and Maddison were at each other most of the game. Surprisingly (!), he came off second best. I don’t think this was a game that required Yates in any way.

But then, I don’t think there are many games which require Yates.

He’s increasingly annoying me. I don’t mind him being the most limited player on the pitch. I don’t like him being the stupidest as well.

  • 8 Apr 2024, 7:48 a.m.

If he uses his wiles to minimise the influence of the star player then there's a case for it. Maddison isn't significantly more important than others for Spuz.

Sangare was supposed to be the massively upgraded Yates. But until that player emerges from the bushes, Yates is the best we have at what he does.

  • 8 Apr 2024, 8:28 a.m.

That's how I felt about it, looked more like a pat than a punch. Keane made a comment about Yates, that he's a top lad but he has a tendency to go over all the time and he needs to stop it. It annoys me and I am a big Yates fan and general advocate for keeping home grown players in the team for as long as possible. He could have been sent off for sitting there asking for VAR given he had already got a yellow card.

I also didn't think the Danio challenge as a red card. Sometimes contact like that happens, there was no sign of intent, it was just two people going for the ball. VAR makes things look bad at times, but if we are going to maintain any sense of a physical game you have to be able to make challenges.

And linked to that notion of this being a physical game, MGW got booked for what I thought was a great challenge. I don't want to see players getting injured through reckless tackles, but it's going too far the other way at the moment and it isn't helped by so many players going down screaming at the slightest contact and then springing back up after the foul is given, which brings us back round to the first again.

When Origi and Domingez were about to come on, Alan Smith made a comment about how strong our bench was, adding something like "it should be with all the money they've spent". Like we were the big spending club in that game - three of their back four cost more than our record signing...

He fits with spudz. Their diving and whinging is up on a par with United at their worst under Fergie. Kane started it, “Sonny” has ramped it up. Slightest touch they go down and start screaming at the ref for a foul, penalty etc.
But no-one dares call them out on it.
Kane is English so he couldn’t possibly be a cheat, he’s just clever (see Maddison), and everyone loves “Sonny”, don’t they?

It's perhaps worth mentioning that he first holds Yates so that he can deliver the punch. Then short arm punches him. Presumably to maximise the impact, with minimal observability.

I don't know what to say about people who seek to excuse that, or indulge in whataboutery in regards to Yates instead. It's no wonder that everything has turned to shit, now that most people seem to have lost their values, judgement, and morals.

A physical game is always going to be subject to flashpoints. Which might be understandable, but still need to be punished for being contrary to the laws of the game. It's not like Yates had done him knee high launched from distance. The little shit covertly and premeditatedly punched him off the ball, to gain an advantage.

    Quite.

Our subs were strange. Ange obviously decided they had lost the initiative and hooked his two central midfielders. We never had control after that. I was surprised it took so long for Nuno to respond. 10 mins after we were 3-1 down?

I also didn’t understand the logic or order of his subs. If you are taking off MGW, and bringing on Nico, why bring Reyna on 15min later?

  • 8 Apr 2024, 9:31 a.m.

Think it's pretty clear he doesn't trust/rate Reyna for anything more than 10-15 minute cameos.

So when Yates went off, he looked around and eventually gave the armband to Williams. When he went off, TV showed him looking around for someone to pass it on to but didn't show who ended up with it...?
