I do it for myself. For my own reasons (as we all do everything, even if indirectly, for ourselves). I do it because I believe that there are more important things in life than money. I do it because I promised Graham that I wouldn't put advertising, or monetise it (I think technically we are out of contract on this one). But most of all I do it so that I can be taken for granted, and patronised by you, and others like you*.

    Prick.

    * Entirely tongue in cheek, and just for the bants. lolz.

My personal cup overfloweth, in this regard. I is rich (not B, nor formerly glasgae).

Damn you…This brought a lump to my throat. Especially with the added Graham reference….

I often think that, as the galaxy expands, and then contracts and dies, so will talkback (but in a shorter timeframe). It started with me talking to myself, and then gradually grew...and will ultimately end with me talking to myself without any external engagement. In the interim, I value what are largely intelligent and and constructive opinions of others. Something that I need to hear, even if I have an unusual approach to demonstrating that appreciation. Being all things to all people, and making money out of it, is not, and never has been, the driver here.

There is a value in sharing opinions and hearing things that you might not want to hear...and that is most powerfuul when delivered by people with whom you have a history, and who are thoughtful and invested.

Talkback has a value while it's mostly an opportunity to have those discussions in the pub, with people that you mostly respect and like, on a larger scale than just in the pub. Until people no longer feel that way, or gradually die out.

...and then it's back to me, ranting into the void, and drinking from puddles.

Yes, I am very aware of this, obviously even more so at the moment. I like to think that nothing I say is aimed at driving numbers, it certainly doesn't drive any numbers anyway(!), and I actively stop myself from putting stuff out there a lot of the time to limit the volume, but it's still very much true.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:36 p.m.

Rubbish. We had more and better chances, and were undone by crooked refereeing combined with two speculative shots from outside the box. We weren't great yesterday, but we were the better team.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:43 p.m.

I'm pleased you wrote this as I thought I was going crazy. I thought we were actually ok yesterday. Three penalties and a big miss from MGW. We could easily have won.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:46 p.m.

I think this is broadly correct, but we weren't very good without the ball. again. It's why everton scored, and why they often looked like brazil flooding through our midfield.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:47 p.m.

PS: I'm disappointed Sels didn't save at least one of the shots.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:50 p.m.

Yeah, Turner or Vlach would get pelters for letting those two in. But, understandably, no-one has any desire to talk about goalkeepers any more. If we stay up and we can move two on (on top of Hennessey being out of contract), we should be looking for another keeper.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 1:50 p.m.

That’s the game I saw too. It’s of no comfort though as mainly we’ve either done ok but not enough to get points on the board, or just done badly and also not put points on the board.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 2 p.m.

It wasn't three penalties though. I thought the MotD2 analysis of them was pretty good. It was one penalty really. It was still very influential, but it was one.

The game itself was littered with errors and nerves on both sides and lacked any real quality, it was very much a tense relegation battle. Their two shots on goal couldn't have been better placed, whether by design or accident, and our defending of both efforts was passive. It was a pretty even game that could have gone either way or neither.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 2:20 p.m.

For me, there are definitely teams that would have got all three decisions. We've seen penalties given for less. Often. I agree that for the football that I want to see, it's only probably two, or maybe just one. But that's not how the modern game is refereed.

I have some sympathy for the defender for the handball... but that's always been hand ball. The first one would be soft, but he's kicked him, from behind, not got the ball, but got the man.

If your bar is such that only the last one gets given, we would be watching a completely different football to the one that we are actually seeing week in, week out, for years.

Unless we are now completely chucking out consistency, and going with individual referees managing individual games. Which I'm totally not against, but hasn't been how it is at any time this millennium.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 2:32 p.m.

Yeah, it was one definite, stonewall, no-argument penalty and two get-given-these-days-letter-of-the-law penalties.

Danny Murphy made the point that the handball would definitely have been given earlier in the season. How is that a thing??!

  • 22 Apr 2024, 2:32 p.m.

Ody wants out, Hennessey seems to be a coach now, although still registered to play (comes out in a different kit to Turner, Sels and Ody).

I thought Danilo was to blame for both goals more than anything - so slow to close down both scorers, particularly the first one, where he barely reacted. Shame, as I thought he was getting back to his form of last season, albeit in a different role, and having more influence on games.

  • 22 Apr 2024, 2:33 p.m.

I am a bit mystified by people saying we played well.

We didn't have a shot on target in the second half.

Edit: and I also thought Danilo jogged around yesterday like a man who doesn't give a fuck.

These two bits definitely colour my judgment on things. I would like to see more empowered match officials and no VAR. I would like a higher bar for handball based on the speed of the game and incident, not a still photograph or slow motion replay, and I would like offside to be a call on the pitch by the linesman with the benefit given to the attacking player in close decisions.

I accept that the game has moved on (badly) in these areas.
