    So we’re settling on NES?

If he wins a few in a row will he be Super NES?

I’ll get me Super Mario coat…

    It's not a new invention, I'm afraid.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 9:09 p.m.

No Russ. I just want you to explain what you see in this squad, so that when someone says that so and so should be doing better, I have a feint trace of understanding about what they might be on about.

Just say what you see. It's not a trick.

    Cunts!

  • 20 Dec 2023, 9:27 p.m.

Have you considered asking the someone who has said that? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to be putting words into their mouth.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 9:29 p.m.

I can't do a detailed comparison with Luton, but if you look at the market value of those players and their wages and the top league experience our squad win comfortably. That's one reason why we're above them, and the gap would be more if more of our players had played to their potential. Mangala, Niakhate, Elanga, Murillo, MGW even Aurier would all walk in to their first XI. Their striker and Barkley might walk into ours, and I don't know how they are fixed in goal but if they have someone able bodied who can see they would probably too.

On Dominguez, he's made, what, 4 starts? Not a lot to go on based on what has done at Forest though he looked very good in a couple of those and awful in a couple more. He's just signed, new country, new much faster and physical league, new language. Like Mangala (who I missed out but would be in the group above for me so that takes it to 9) he may need a bit of time. But before he joined us he had consistently been one of the better midfielders in Italy, he's an Argentina international and he clearly has some quality about him.

We do seem to have the worst goalkeepers in the league though, we are limp up front without Awoniyi, nobody apart from him and Elanga really carry any goal threat and that makes the rest of the team look so much worse.

Now if we have players who are better than they have shown I am not saying that's down to Cooper. It's probably in no small part down to how and when we signed them, the size and way the squad has been assembled and managed and perhaps broader organisational issues at the club we are starting to hear about but aren't surprising.

That's for individuals to decide where they want to be with it. It is a matter of record that some people have used quality of player/squad arguments. ... and given that we are all wrong about most stuff, a collective assesment might be useful.

Of course if those people can't articulate any actual thought through opinions, then that will speak for itself. I'm not interested in pointing and shouting here*. I'm interested in an actual collective assessment of the tools at our disposal.

Of course if nobody else is, or have any actual clues, then that's that. But it shouldn't be hard, or actually that controversial. For the level we are playing at, how does the squad stack up. Useful, interesting, no?

You seem to be concentrating on entirely the wrong thing.

    * Ahem.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 9:46 p.m.

Well, I've given you my view on that. I don't think I've seen enough of some of those players to make a fair assessment of how good they can be because I don't watch a lot of PSV or Bologna or Sevilla (or any at all, if we're being honest), but their track records do give me reason to hope that they can be better than they have been.

I have definitely seen all I want to see of Cheik Kouyate and Willy Boly though. I'm very comfortable with my (and your) assessment of them.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 9:54 p.m.

I liked russ's post but then I read the last para, and I don't think Kouyate and Boly are bad squad players at all. They're both physically up to the level and they between them have a lot of premier league experience, which shows occasionally.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 10:10 p.m.

Nope. You are still not getting it. This. Is. Not. Hard.

On the basis of what we have actually seen for us, what is our opinion of the standard players are at, and what are their skills and attributes, weaknesses and limitations, at this actual level now.

Of course we can amend stuff as we see more, our view changes... etc.

We have just sacked a manager because he was not doing well enough. In eleven days we will have a transfer window open. A new manager is about to run the squad through a Xmas programme.

Are you not a teensy bit curious about what we actually have, how that looks after application of the new manager, and what might be needed in the squad?

    I am.

Fuck me is it hard to get football fans to talk about the actual football. Unnecessarily hard.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 11:03 p.m.

No, because I haven't seen them under the new manager yet. So I have no idea.

Looking forward to the Bournemouth game on Saturday though.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 11:26 p.m.

Okay, we'll cross you off the 'potential scout' list.

  • 20 Dec 2023, 11:47 p.m.

The point being that almost all players are bought without seeing them play under the buying clubs current coach recently. You look at what they can do, what you want, and you make an assesment.

When a club gets a new coach, nobody says 'no idea what our players can do, they've not played under that coach yet'.

I recognise that if you watch football, and have no idea what is happening, then you probably cant contribute.

You don't have to be a football genius to see that manure have had their pants pulled down over Antony (at the current stage of development). No. He's not going to suddenly be perfect if manure appoint nuno (or equivalent) tomorrow.

  • 21 Dec 2023, 12:59 a.m.

I think, as in i don't have a clue at all. We have a squad of good/reasonable players. Who aren't playing as a team yet. For me you can have a player who is not particularly "great" but works very well in the team.I keep banging on about the past I know, but our best spells were when a team (of not great players) gelled as a team. John McGovern was a good player but a great member of a superb team.

  • 21 Dec 2023, 2:17 a.m.

It's bad enough when I cite Dave Phillips as an example from 30 years ago. John McGovern (whom I love) is almost 50 years ago. But this is an area where I want (one of) Sangare, Dominguez, Yates, Mangala, Kouyate to be the midfield daddy. Having more than one may be possession-effective, but is progression-ineffective.

  • 21 Dec 2023, 8:52 a.m.

Definitely going to have at least two, maybe three. For a number of reasons. It's the nuno way. We don't have a midfielder who currently can do the job at the level themselves. If we don't get the numbers in there other teams will stroll through us like at the start of coopers premiership adventure.

It will be a three, and probably a three. With a two up - sacrificing elanga, mgw or wood.

Those three are no nevez, jota, and jiminez.... and goals were at a premium with them for wolves. So it will be grind out results I expect.

Wolves had them in the championship. I look at our squad, and what bodies to put where, and I do not see many delightful choices. Nothing of that class.

I would be massively surprised if we don't bring in four or five at least in January.
