One of my uncles might be alive, or maybe he’s not. I forget which and now I’m too afraid to ask anyone.

This is what mothers are for. Ring them when you are in a rush, and they will fill you in with every minute detail about people that you absolutely no memory of.

I have an Irish mother so she fucking LOVES telling me about the deaths of random third cousins I met on a farm when I was six… but the uncles and aunts are all very well known to me, which is why it’s awkward. All the rest are definitely alive.

I'm going back over in a couple of weeks. I can ask my mum as she also keeps up to date with these things. She's bound to know.

My mum is also very good at this sort of thing.

Not so much with Irish relatives as they're all on my Dad's side and for most part, dead, but she does like to talk a lot about former colleagues I never heard of and their extended families as if I'm on personal close terms with them.
