Because he was in an offside position when the ball was played by his team mate, and Maguire playing the ball didn't make it a separate play. The IFAB Laws Of The Game specifically account for this scenario:
"A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately played* the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent."
Maguire deliberately played the ball, it did not deflect off (of) him.
At the very most it's a matter of interpretation by the ref, but I'd argue that under the IFAB definition Maguire did not at any point have control of the ball and it was therefore not considered a deliberate play. You're welcome to argue the stupidity and/or the unnecessary complexity of the rule, but as it stands I think the ref got it right.
Only because Grimsbot won on penalties. If the Scum had made it through because of that I would rightly feel flvery sorry for the home supporters. Either way all’s well that ends well.
Thanks for the heads up. Have you thought of becoming a VAR official? You'd be perfect. You don't understand how the laws should be applied to actual football.
Let me be absolutely clear here. The referee was wrong in law.
I'm not saying that they wouldn't try to justify it was a legitimate decision....that's why the laws are so complex. Wriggle room.
Far too much interpretation. The guy was offside according to the Clough rule of if you're on the pitch you are interfering with play. That should be the end of it, but the rules on this, on hand ball and on everything else have changed to the point it's just make it up as you go along.
