I thought about asking whether everyone would've preferred Championsandfriends league but no cup run or cup run Wembley visit excitement and a lesser Euro competition

Who says they are mutually exclusive? It's arguable that our two most successful recent seasons have been accompanied by our two best recent cup runs.

Maybe a good team in the league, can be a good team in the cup, and vice versa. And performances in both feed off each other.

I would like to see us win the fa cup in my lifetime. Genuinely don't give a fuck about playing in Europe. I care about results against teams that I know, that we have rivalries with, that we play regularly, now as well as historically.

Is there anyone next season who fulfils this criteria!?

Of course they aren't mutually exclusive, but there could be a conversation about whether fewer cup minutes along the way might've prevented our Devon Loch tribute act. Though I realised it's not a conversation I'm interested in, hence punching myself in the face for even thinking it.

I stand corrected as I’d read differently.

Everything really has gone against us over recent weeks.

Mainly down to us. We were great for 30/38 games and have only flickered since then.

But, in the 1500m, being in the pack at the bell doesn’t guarantee you a medal at the end. Other teams strengths and tactics as well as us running out of gas will mean that we will have to settle for a consolation prize.

    Good analogy.

    Liverpool, Spurts, Arsenal.

You know, clubs we have competed against, played finals against, helped form, that sort of thing.

Do we definitely enter a play off phase then?

I saw somewhere that based on the coefficients our likeliest outcome is a home and away playoff v Sparta Prague. Don't know how much truth there is in that though.

A quick bit of googling and there are 3 qualifying rounds before the play off round. England coefficient means we enter at playoff round, which I'd think makes it hard to know who we would play as it'd be someone who's come though the qualifying rounds I assume.

Last year the draw for the play off round was 5 August with games on 22 and 29 August.

Villa were in the conference last season. Didn't do them any harm.

I'd be loving this if it wasn't going to put us into the europa conference.

Believe we’d still be ok if Chelsea win the conference and finish 6th.

So obviously Betis will spawn it.

If Palace win this, Chelsea winning the conference doesn’t impact anything. We need to finish 6th for Europa which means we have to win the last two the way things look right now.

I'm not sure this is correct. Please show your working?

    Correct.

I'd really love to see us win tomorrow. It would put alot of pressure on City's midweek game against Bournemouth.

    Yes.
But in terms of ‘in our hands’, win the last 2 and we definitely finish above Chelsea which would mean Europa Vase (or Big Cup) rather than Conference.

I do fear some of us are descending into the entitled. Debating which European tournament we'd most like to compete in, with an apparent irritation from some that we've 'fucked the Champions League', is quite amusing.

My hope for this year was to be clear of the relegation scuffle with a few games to go, and perhaps to finish around 14th or 15th. It's been a fucking fantastic season even if we lose these last two games.

In August, my stretch season, that I could barely dream of, was to finish in the Palace zone (without the FA Cup, obviously).

It's possible to feel all these things at once:

    • Grateful for not being in a relegation fight
    • Grateful we're in the PL full stop
    • Pleased that we're going to get some European football
    • Annoyed we've fucked up getting into the CL when, from the position we were in, we should have done.
