I'm sure the boys will be annoyed but at this stage of the season I'm not unhappy about two of our most important players having a weekend of rest.

Probably should have got knocked out the cup for more rest...

The issue for me is that if MGW is playing for one of the Sky 6 he gets picked, so just edges him towards leaving sooner rather than later.

I don't remember Woan ever being in contention for England. Think that might have been a Jim thing.

He was talked about a bit because there was a lack of natural left-sided English qualified players at the time. Steve Guppy and Alan Thompson were others that used to get mentioned as possibles even though they never seemed good enough.

But I'm pretty sure Woan never made an England squad, so he'd have been a left-field pick for the Euro 96 squad.

McManaman played both sides equally well. But if you're going to play 3 at the back then there was only one obvious choice for a natural left-sided English player, and he provided one of the greatest moments of the tournament.

My son reckons the U21s would hammer the senior squad if they played them.

I think it was more that I thought at the time it was crazy he wasn't even in contention.

Was also annoyed Steve Stone didn't get a starting place ahead of Anderton who had been injured all the previous season.

If you are talking about Pearce, he mostly played on the left of the back three in that tournament when we played a three. (Venables used both a three and a four.)

Didn't Venables play 3 at the back with wing backs in 96? Not sure Woany's legendary workrate ever really lent itself to playing that role.

Four mainly I think - G Neville, Adams, Southgate, Pearce. Or was G Neville at wing-back?
(midfield of McManaman, Platt, Gazza and Sicknote, with Teddy and Shearer up front)
Went to three at half-time v Scotland when Psycho was hooked for Jame Redknapp.
And Pearce was only playing as Le Saux was injured.

I think it was different shapes in (3) and out (4) of possession. Neville was pushed forward more when we were in possession. Also Ince started most games ahead of Platt.

But Neville didn't start against Germany (Platt/Gazza/Ince), so it must have been a three with Anderton as RWB.
