Pretty much every word in those two sentences is doing a lot of heavy lifting. Apart from Leicester and Derby, I’m not sure we are seen as insufferable wankers by anyone. And for those two fanbases, it is not due to the “sustained period of relative success”. They thought that when we were in the third tier.

It's not very complicated. All fan bases are made up of a broad distribution of ordinary people. Most ordinary people are vile turds. Football is merely a reflection of society.
