Next year's Championship looks brutal. The teams that have gone down will obviously be favourites, the ones who missed out in the playoffs will likely be good again (with the possible exception of Coventry who might struggle to replace Hamer and Gyokeres), a couple of the promoted teams are bigger clubs that will have the resources to strengthen significantly (Wednesday and Ipswich), and there are a bunch of traditionally strong Championship / yoyo clubs such as West Brom, Watford and Stoke who always have the ability to be good.

I think fester will be fooked.

They will lose Maddison, Barnes and tielemans for certain. Probably James Justin too.

I suppose Daka and an ageing Vardy will stick around but who’s going to pass to them?

    Chicago: Chuckling.

It's amazing to me that this feels like the most generic of Championship line-ups and yet we (and Derby) are not in it:

    Birmingham City
    Blackburn Rovers
    Bristol City
    Cardiff City
    Coventry City
    Huddersfield Town
    Hull City
    Ipswich Town
    Leeds United
    Leicester City
    Middlesbrough
    Millwall
    Norwich City
    Plymouth Argyle
    Preston North End
    Queens Park Rangers
    Rotherham United
    Sheffield Wednesday
    Southampton
    Stoke City
    Sunderland
    Swansea City
    Watford
    West Bromwich Albion

It's almost pure "second tier". No massive teams slumming it, no Yeovils or MK Dons over achieving. (TBF, Leeds are a big club, but they don't feel out of place in the Champ.)

"As of the 2023–24 season, Millwall have spent 97 consecutive seasons in the Football League.

Seasons spent at Level 1 of the football league system: 2
Seasons spent at Level 2 of the football league system: 47
Seasons spent at Level 3 of the football league system: 43
Seasons spent at Level 4 of the football league system: 5"

    So, classic Championship club.

Plymouth and Rotherham pop up every now and again, right. They feel like the kind of team that would take four points off us during any season in the last 20 or so.

Likewise Wednesday. I still think it's going to be as strong next year as I've ever seen that division.

Yes, but they've been out of the Premier League for nearly as long as we were. (Relegated 2000, never been back.)

Point of order - that makes next season their 24th out. We were out for 23.

I don't think Plymouth have ever played higher than the third tier before.

Yeah they have. Not much but they have. Mrs Simon’s only away game ever (and second, and final, game ever) was at Plymouth in about 2004.

Let's be honest. Leicester are coming straight back up aren't they. We were told that Burnley were going to be in major financial difficulty when they were relegated. That their parachute payments would be needed to service debt. Just like Leicester. But they easily got promoted again. The gap between the divisions is just so large now that even a badly run club who are in huge financial jeopardy still have enough to be better than the rest.

Yeah but Watford and Norwich, who went down with Burnley, both failed to make the playoffs.
