Completely pointless as biology has suggested we will still revert to type after a bit, but here goes....

With the news that Whole Foods (A large, supposedly healthier store in the USA, bought by Amazon) is selling grass fed Beef that is chock full of microplastics. I think I am fooked anyway. Since last June wifey made the decision to not really drink anymore. I have followed suit, even though for Christmas most of my clients rather than give me filthy lucre for have gifted me loads of bottles of Bourbon. Which I admit I like but unfortunately health care over here is so shit, the thought of getting cancer in this country is truly terrifying.

So I decided the course of action with my average of 14 hour work days is that i will endeavour to not eat late. I usually work until about 8pm every night and if traffic is good then I can get home in 30 minutes. This will involve having to box wifey's magnificent food and eat it the next day. This also poses the problems of when and what to eat before getting home so I am not too hungry to sleep. And Sleep. I average 5 hours a night as I am up before 5am and go to bed roughly after 11. With waking up at 3am because my late food has spiked my blood sugar..

So I guess, I am going to go full Ingo and try and be in bed by 10pm. Ironically I am never tired at night just during the day. Damn you eating habits and Circadian rhythms.

So, booze, eating late and better sleep. I give it maybe 3 days to a week.

    I'm fooked aren't I?

Friend of mine who is a proper nerd and also super fit recommends this. zoe.com/ He does iron man shit and everything. Him paying attention also meant that he found the prostate cancer that was giving no symptoms and is consequently still alive. Which is nice.

I'm 42. Age is growing on me, I need to respect this delapidated temple of a body a little more.

Last year I had a three month break from alcohol. Went back to it and for about a month I was drinking fairly normally. But old habits die hard.

So here we are again. Day two dry. But this time I'm going longer. Not setting an end date. Maybe I won't drink again. Not making that commitment, but I know three months wasn't enough to change a habit of a lifetime.

My new job is desk based, so I need to make an effort to be active. Off up the hill to the leisure centre, find out how much a membership would be.

I don't do resolutions. But I did relax my regular exercise, workout and alcohol regime through December, so I will he returning to it now it's no longer the holiday period.

    • No drinking at home
    • Gym at least 4 days a week, run at least 2
    • Maximum 15g of saturated fat and at least 150g of protein every day

Classic January behaviour. Many gyms make their profit on new year memberships, without having to increase the provision of facilities.

Had a text from an old football friend looking for a game. Don't think he's played for ten years. Expect the newfound enthusiasm to wane by february. No short term measures ever work. You have to make a life commitment to permanent change, to get permanent change.

Two years ago my new years resolution was to make no new years resolutions. Holding well so far.

I'm (sorta) on the same regime, with tweaks (largely vegetarian baring 20% treat days, no added fat apart from on treat days, 2 cardio days, three muscle exercise days, no drinking at home - except for specific events). It's been over a year now.

150g seems excessive? I thought it was about 1g per kg of bodyweight if you are trying to build muscle?

  • 2 Jan 2025, 5:01 p.m.

By that measure I should be eating a minimum of 150g protein per day. I'm not. Nor am I losing muscle mass.

I dropped meat completely for a good while and had fish, eggs and vegan meat substitutes as my primary protein sources, but I've relaxed a bit in the last three months and added chicken and turkey breast back into my diet. I very much doubt I'll ever eat red meat or pork again though.

My cheat meal is invariably pizza, because I don't otherwise eat cheese. The only dairy I consume is 5% cream in my morning coffee, I use soy milk in lieu of dairy products everywhere else.

Maintenance requires far less, that ratio is the goal for muscle growth / gain.

Likewise on the pizza, though I also 'treat' on other things. like steak. Dairy is out - apart from yoghurt and fromage frais (both decent sources of protein). Eggs are in. If I need some form of milk (I almost never do, except for some cooking), I make it fresh from oats. Oats are very much in. Atta flour, more than more processed flours. Major staples of tomato's (canned, puree, passata, fresh), mushrooms, and onions and garlic. Also substantial quantities of cider vinegar, for flavouring and seasoning.

  • 2 Jan 2025, 6:44 p.m.

We own an outdoor pizza oven so that isn't changing as we have a Pizzas Sunday evenings. I have a grass fed steak with it (after the latest news, yikes should I even bother?) and the rest of the week I am pretty much vegetarian because wifey is. Processed food? Easy to stay away from that...

Sleep? Ah fuck who needs it. Eating late? Well wifey cooked late. Shit. Sunk already... Must do better as 120 people a week aren't going to work themselves out doing this malarky.
