One for the London TB members, I guess. How busy does the centre of town get on New Year's Eve during the day?

We're thinking of taking Little Miss BW down for a day out before she goes back to school, and it looks like we can get a cheapish hotel for December 30. We'd therefore be in London on the 31st daytime - we have no interest in sticking around for the midnight fireworks.

I'd imagine we'd be heading home early evening (7pm-8pm sort of time), but I'm thinking it must get pretty busy from late afternoon onwards? We can absolutely avoid the Embankment/Westminster area at that time, but would need to get a tube from somewhere like Baker Street to get back to the car.

New Year's Eve had mostly appealed because it looks like the best day of weather this coming week.

Totally fine. I doubt you'll notice any difference to a normal day.

We were in London between Xmas and through New Years Eve last year, we left on New Years Day, as long as you avoid Oxford Street, Regent Street and Victoria/Embankment you’ll be absolutely fine.

Meant to be getting the train to London at 6am tomorrow. Trying to decide on strategy. I could go tonight instead, but I'd need to book a hotel. Plus I don't want to. In the morning I would normally cycle the 4-5km to the station, but that might be tricky in the snow (though sometimes not as bad as you might think, you can cycle in the type tracks of cars and it can be ok ish). Buses unlikely to be running. So I might walk it. Will mean an (even) earlier start than normal.

Is Sheffield to London by fixie in the snow and ice really that risky? Be reet.

As the trains won't be running, this seems a bit moot.

That isn't a given yet. They often do in bad weather. I'll have to check about 5am and see.

I can't be the only person watching the storm updates hoping the wind speed cracks 3 figures.

They cancelled all school bus services in Powys for tomorrow at lunch time today. Big daughter's school closed as only about 30 kids in walking distance. So far we've had a bit of drizzle.

Proper snow that is settling here in Sheffield now and a thick mist descended at about 5pm. Feels very end of world.

Just sorting out my wellies and coat etc to try and get to the station tomorrow morning. Obviously hoping trains are cancelled ...

There is snow, but it's not thick and more mushy than slippery, so I cycled to the station at 5am ok. As they've lifted ticket restrictions I was actually able to get a quicker and direct train rather than the one I'd planned, so things have actually gone pretty well this morning. I'll be in London by 7:40.
