Just ordered a French Horn mouthpiece to see if I can make it do a noise.

I have just realized reading the last page of the thread that I can only relate to Tricky. The thorny subject of flat footballs used to bug me as a child. At no point have I ever had to pluck hairs or whiskers out of my nose, ears or eye brows.

One of our neighbours/friends got burgled a couple of nights ago so I’m being reactionary and looking into CCTV. I’ve never been bothered as likelihood of said scumbag giving a full facial ID is somewhat unlikely. However it may give some peace of mind when out as I do feel a bit vulnerable where we are due to being on the end of the close with easy access to our back garden….. so does anyone have any clue what I should be getting?
Ring is the brand I’ve had a brief look at and seems ok, but is there any other make worth considering? are battery ones any good? (Obviously easier/cheaper than getting an electrician in).
Any advice welcome.

We have a eufy system, battery powered and on the WiFi. Seems OK.

Not CCTV, but we have a Ring doorbell. It doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi very well and the battery needs recharging every month or two. But video quality is good and the app is ok.

I have a Ring doorbell too, I have only had to charge it twice since early January and connects to my Wi-Fi totally fine, I really like it (the novelty of checking what is happening at my house when I am away has not worn off yet)
I do not have many people coming and going at mine though, and I do not use it to talk to people on, so perhaps that is why the battery lasts a bit longer.
I find the video quality very good, especially the night cam. I do subscribe to the website so it saves my videos but it is only £1. something a month. I am weighing up whether to get one of the CCTV cameras for the back too, I do really like them.
I do know someone who would warn against them if you are worried about people having the ability to hack them or having access to your data etc. -

We have a ring doorbell, one of the plug in ones. It does the job. Very handy and the quality of the picture is very good, even at night.
From what I’ve heard about the ring cctv /floodlight they’re a bit more of a drain on battery and need to be wired in really (there’s a solar version but in winter they don’t charge up a great deal) which adds to the expense/faff. Haven’t pulled the plug yet. There’s cheaper CCTV (some of the Chinese stuff seems a bit dodge, though Tricky will say Ring are no better) but the Ring stuff is very handy with the app, and I don’t really care if Bozos watches me go to work in the morning.
The price for the vid saving/playback does increase after the initial period, but it’s not too bad.

I don't understand the concept of security, where you delegate that to a third party without knowledge of what they do with it, or how secure it is in their hands. Seems like a contradiction to me.
This is a convenience, of the shitting your pants variety. There are other ways of doing it, but probably not as convenient.
(IP cams, security software - motion etc, home assistant, etc. Complicated, but better)
Secure installations don't use the likes of ring. Because it's not really a security device. It's a convenience device.
A not convenient way of doing it more securely (all data stored and processed on site ) would be a frigate system, integrated with home assistant. A simple alternative would be something like motioneye, which could be used to build a single board ( like raspberry pi ) motion camera system.
I fully understand that isn't going to happen.
Even many bought modern "CCTV security" systems, rely on web services and applications, and are not entirely secure in the scheme of things. I've seen a few that made me shudder.

We have a small window in our front door. It doesn't have a record function, but it is ultra HD quality.

Not with my eyesight it wouldn't be.
I got a battery ring camera when someone kept messing around with our milk delivery three Friday nights running.Turned out it was a fox. Who knew it would be able to get the foil top off milk bottles with its nose. And it kept lining the bottles up in odd ways, exactly perpendicular to the door and suchlike.
Anyway battery lasts a few months and it is oddly addictive seeing the comings and goings to the front door when not in (on a practical note we can message a neighbour to grab a parcel left on doorstep when away).
Can't think it would prevent a burglar much, but isn't the theory they go next door to someone who has no security, however piss poor yours is.

My theory is that having a shit house with no decent stuff is a better deterrent. Mission accomplished.
