Obviously I can't speak for Britain, but the farmers union in AoNZ has been solidly anti-environment for years, even though many farmers are trying to reduce their impact. My theory is that if the petro-industry-funded, obstructionist, right-wing ideological organisation were to go to the govt and ask for financial/tax support for farmers undertaking change then they would get it.
But they don't, and they fight every attempt. I spent a lot of time on dairy farms as a kid, and AoNZ is pretty rural overall, so son-of-the-soil stuff doesn't work on me so much.
