...I swear it didn't use to happen at uni and in the years that follow...

It's true, and one of the many suboptimal things about getting older. Alcohol, even in very small quantities, fucks up my sleep now and causes a number of issues the following day. This was never the case when I was younger.

I mostly avoid it for that reason, which is shit because there are times (end of the working week especially) when I really crave a beer or two. The non-alcoholic ones are getting much better but are, by definition, not the same thing.

Same, the hangxiety the following day is a new and horrible thing. Made worse when I actually have said and/or done stupid things.

I think at the top end of consumption I am more random these days, and the hangovers deeper and longer, so I don't tend to do it...but in the 3-4 range it works pretty well for me, and takes away the pain from some of the niggles. I tend to sleep better as well...apart from the periodic pissing problem.

I don't have a 3-4 range. I drink no booze, or all the booze. No middle ground.

This probably means that your tipping point is: 1.

I’m older than any of you and I have to report that tolerance to alcohol gets worse, and worse and worse as you age. When I worked in Soho, I regularly drank two or three pints at lunchtime, sometimes preceded by a glass of champagne and then followed it up with a couple of beers on the train home and, often, wine with dinner. These days, I can manage half a bottle of wine or up to four pints as long as I’m eating, but no more. Tonight, I met up with one of my boys and we went to a podcast live show. I had four pints of session IPA and caught the bus home. I’m now drinking a mug of hot chocolate, pondering taking a couple of ibuprofen and wondering how I’ll feel in the morning. Getting old is shit, I tell you. But of course it’s a lot better than not getting old.

I fancy a bottle of beer now, but I'd almost certainly be asleep before I finished it.

I'm working at a festival/rave until 4am tonight. Kids these days can drink a lot more than I used to when I was their age. I'm back in at midday tomorrow, and they'll be on the G&Ts from the word go.

The local Facebook group isn't happy about the noise, which is nice.

I'll have a beer some time next week. In my 30s I was able to drink as much as I wanted, but after one or two now I just feel like going to bed.

I don't really drink beer much these days as it makes me fat, I stick to wine and liquor. I can drink industrial quantities of vodka and tonic and it doesn't really give me hangovers.

This might be why you get cunted. The wonderful thing about beer is that it's largely self moderating. Its hard work to drink enough to hurt yourself. Modern higher strength fruit juice like IPA's getting towards the edgy side.

I’ve always had bad hangovers, even in the teen/20s days. Could never bounce up the next day and get on with things as if I hadn’t been out. I wouldn’t say it’s got worse as I’ve got older, just equally as pathetic.

    nail on head.

Russ has fallen for the same issue as most my merican friends, first thing they do is head for the liquor when ordering a drink, when most bars also don’t measure its a barman pouring a 1/3rd of a pint as one shot… 1 hour later and oh I may have drunk too much..

I understand the diet complimentary characteristics of spirits (liquor still makes me giggle like a schoolkid at the thought of childish jokes), and its advantages as a short cut to oblivion. But pour concentrated poison into your body, and you are probably going to feel bad. We all already know this.

In other news. I am reaching the point where I need to order some astro boots, as I'm down to my last functional pair, and there's a long lead time on delivery. On the other hand I might never need astro boots again, depending on what happens with this knee. Not sure what to do.

You could halve the potential risk by just ordering one boot.
