I would imagine bald, fat old man is probably too niche.

Beginning to think about swapping our ageing diesel car for an electric.

  • 12 Sep 2023, 9:05 p.m.

I have a ULEZ compliant diesel 2016 road tax free Peugeot. I have a feeling I will keep it for a very long time.

I think part of the problem is a school friend was back home the other day to see his folks and we met up for a drink. He arrived in a brand new BMW i4 and we went out for a quick drive. Fcuk me, that's a beautiful car.

Way beyond what I could justify (or realistically afford) but made me start thinking seriously about electric for the first time.

    You drive into London?

  • 12 Sep 2023, 10:45 p.m.

I did earlier this year. Parked up off Kensington High Street. It was a joy driving around the quiet streets of Central London.

Drive it into Bristol more though.

    INTO London? In a CAR?

    You absolute BEAST!

  • 13 Sep 2023, 7:35 a.m.

I went electric earlier this year. It was something of a no brainer for me given my daily commute of 50 odd miles a day 4 days a week and that I'm fortune enough to have use of ample 22kW charge points for no cost to me at work

Also the charge point network isn't as spatse as you may first fear, but it's also not as cheap as once it was, but i's far from restrictive. And I believe a home charging options work out not eye watering and favourably comparable to petrol / diesel. It's proper to fun drive as well.

But is it ULEZ compliant for your annual trip into Soho? That's the most important thing.

  • 13 Sep 2023, 7:45 a.m.

My old diesel was ULEZ compliant but changed to a petrol as I am sure older diesels will become non compliant over time.

Yes, it appeals to me on a number of levels. And the 'charge anxiety' thing seems negated entirely by a bit of forward planning (or a car with a bigger battery).

My old man is amusingly anti-electric and was gleefully recounting a tale to me the other day about some friends of his who traded their old combustion car for a new Jaguar electric, and then chose not to take it on holiday to Cornwall. The reason being concern they wouldn't find anywhere to charge it (perhaps they don't yet have running water and electricity in the south west?), so went in their cramped 10-year-old Yaris instead. To me, that's daft. To my old man, it's now justification to keep sneering at electric and buying diesels. He'll be dining out on that story for a while, I suspect.

Out of interest, which car did you go for and would you recommend it?

  • 13 Sep 2023, 8:12 a.m.

I don't bother with driving to Soho anymore. Instead a twice annual private jet to the Dam, winter on another plane to Bangkok and and a cruise round the med with the wife in spring.

    Doing my bit, see.

I would concur with the electric love. Me and Mrs Less are both electric (initially, mainly for the tax breaks) and have been for 2.5 years or so. Absolutely love them would highly recommend, unless you don't have a drive or regularly do over (say) 200 to 250 miles per day.

We find them much cheaper to run than our previous diesel cars as we can use the cheaper overnight rates.

    Which cars do you have?

This is your Only fans thing, yeah?
