Someone who has until recently played semi pro....pro in new Zealand a few years ago, but hadn't played with us this year, didn't recognise me. Couldn't believe I was the same player, so different as I am in shape and movement. Also had a Canadian friend who could also play, who couldn't believe I was nearly sixty.

With an old fashioned manual typewriter, you would be able to create a pipe character by typing the letter "l" then going back and writing over the "l" with an upside down exclamation mark, "¡". Instead of "l", be sure not to use an uppercase "I" as these probably have a font that would make them look different.
I haven't checked to see if old manual typewriters have a pipe symbol already, so this advice may be of no help to anyone.
I imagine manual typewriters were a nightmare for fans of wanky fada's over vowels and the like.
